Question 1

What does AP Psychology cover?

Accepted Answer

AP Psychology covers five content areas: **Biological Bases of Behavior** (how your nervous system, brain, sleep, and sensory systems shape behavior), **Cognition** (perception, memory, thinking, problem-solving, and intelligence), **Development and Learning** (how we grow and learn across the lifespan), **Social Psychology and Personality** (how we interact with others and what makes us who we are), and **Mental and Physical Health** (stress, coping, psychological disorders, and treatment). The course also builds four core skills, applying psychological concepts to real scenarios, designing and evaluating research methods, interpreting data, and building evidence-based arguments, so you're not just learning theories but practicing how psychologists think and work. Our notes walk through each unit with examples and research studies, and our exam practice helps you apply what you've learned to both multiple-choice and free-response questions.

Question 2

Where should I start with AP Psychology revision?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting with **Unit 1: Biological Bases of Behavior**, it lays the foundation for everything else in AP Psychology. All the phenomena you'll study later (memory, development, mental health) have a biological basis, so understanding how neurons communicate, how the brain functions, and how sensation works will make the rest of the course click.

Once you've covered Unit 1 in our notes, move through the units in order (Unit 2: Cognition, Unit 3: Development and Learning, Unit 4: Social Psychology and Personality, Unit 5: Mental and Physical Health). Each unit builds on the previous one, and the exam weights them fairly evenly (all five units are 15–25%).

After you've worked through the content, use our exam practice to apply the four AP science practices: Concept Application, Research Methods and Design, Data Interpretation, and Argumentation. The May exam has 75 MCQs (90 minutes, worth 67% of your score) and 2 free-response questions (70 minutes, worth 33%), so you'll want to practice both formats under timed conditions.

Question 3

What's on the AP Psychology exam?

Accepted Answer

The AP Psychology exam has two sections: **Section 1** is 75 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes (67% of your score), and **Section 2** is 2 free-response questions in 70 minutes (33%). The exam was redesigned in 2024 and the new structure launched in May 2025.

| Section | Format | Length | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | 75 multiple-choice questions | 90 min | 67% |
| Section 2 | 2 free-response questions (Article Analysis + Evidence-Based) | 70 min (25 min AAQ incl. 10 min reading + 45 min EBQ incl. 15 min reading) | 33% |

**Content-wise:** the exam covers five units, Biological Bases of Behavior (15–25%), Cognition (15–25%), Development and Learning (15–25%), Social Psychology and Personality (15–25%), and Mental and Physical Health (15–25%). You'll also be tested on four science practices: Concept Application, Research Methods and Design, Data Interpretation, and Argumentation.

Question 4

Can I use these notes as my AP Psychology textbook?

Accepted Answer

Our notes cover the full AP Psychology curriculum, so they can absolutely serve as your main textbook for the course. They're structured around the five units (Biological Bases of Behavior, Cognition, Development and Learning, Social Psychology and Personality, Mental and Physical Health) and include all the content you'll need for the May exam.

**That said**, we'd suggest pairing them with practice questions as you work through each topic, our exam practice questions help reinforce the concepts and get you comfortable with both the multiple-choice format and the free-response style. AP Psychology rewards applied understanding, so reading the notes alongside targeted practice will give you the best preparation.

If your teacher assigns additional readings or case studies, those can complement our notes nicely, but the core content is all here.

Question 5

How do I score a 5 in AP Psychology?

Accepted Answer

Scoring a 5 means demonstrating "extremely well qualified" performance across both the multiple-choice and free-response sections. **In practice it usually looks something like:**

- **Master the unit content**, five units (Biological Bases of Behavior, Cognition, Development and Learning, Social Psychology and Personality, Mental and Physical Health) are tested roughly equally, so gaps in any one unit will cost you. We'd suggest working through our notes by topic to build a complete foundation.

- **Connect concepts to scenarios**, the MCQs and FRQs reward you for *applying* psychological theories and research findings to real-world situations, not just recalling definitions. Our exam practice lets you rehearse this skill under timed conditions.

- **Strengthen your research-methods fluency**, around a third of the exam weight tests your ability to interpret study designs, spot ethical issues, and analyze data. Our notes cover the four science practices (Concept Application, Research Methods and Design, Data Interpretation, Argumentation) that underpin every question type.

- **Prepare for the new FRQ formats**, the 2024 redesign introduced an Evidence-Based Question and an Article Analysis Question. Both require you to propose defensible claims and engage with peer-reviewed sources, so practicing with released FRQs (available on AP Central) is essential.

- **Pace yourself across the year**, AP Psychology is typically a full-year course, and the May exam window doesn't move. Distributed practice (spacing your revision across months, not cramming) significantly improves encoding and retrieval, as our Cognition unit notes explain.
