Best iGCSE schools in Kolkata (2026 guide)

Kolkata's iGCSE scene is smaller than what you'll find in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad. The market here is also older. Where other metros have seen a wave of post-2010 international-network entrants, Kolkata is still shaped by legacy schools founded in the mid-20th century or in the early 2000s: Vidyanjali dates from 1945, Modern High School for Girls (parent of MHSI) from 1952, Calcutta International School from 1953, and both The Cambridge School and Bridge International from 2003.

Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) is the dominant board across the city. If you're specifically looking for a Pearson Edexcel iGCSE pathway, Calcutta International School is the only school in Kolkata that appears to offer one alongside its Cambridge track, based on a third-party listing that references both boards. Every other iGCSE school on the list below is Cambridge-only.

This guide covers the top iGCSE schools in Kolkata, grouped roughly by area, and closes with a short section on how Cognito can help students preparing for iGCSE exams from home.

How to shortlist an iGCSE school in Kolkata

A few things worth thinking about before you book visits.

Board. If you specifically want Edexcel iGCSE, Calcutta International School (CIS) is the one to enquire about, since it appears to be the only school in Kolkata that runs both Cambridge and Edexcel pathways. If Cambridge is fine, your shortlist opens up considerably.

Location. The iGCSE schools cluster in a few pockets. South Kolkata (Kalighat, Hazra, Bhowanipore, Alipore, Ballygunge) is the heritage international belt and holds TCS, Bridge, Vidyanjali, LSAI and MHSI. Anandapur and the EM Bypass corridor is where you'll find Heritage and CIS. South City / Prince Anwar Shah Road has SCIS. North Kolkata / Belghoria has Adamas. Thakurpukur has GEMS Akademia. Commute is worth taking seriously since most are day schools.

Boarding. Kolkata's iGCSE market is almost entirely day. Adamas International School and GEMS Akademia International School are the ones to look at if you need a boarding option.

Sixth form pathway. Some schools take iGCSE students straight into A Levels (TCS, Bridge, GEMS Akademia, SCIS, Vidyanjali). Others push toward the IB Diploma Programme (CIS, Heritage, MHSI). A few run a Cambridge-plus-Indian-board setup where you can move to ISC/CBSE after Class 10 (Adamas, SCIS).

Top iGCSE schools in Kolkata

Top iGCSE schools in Kolkata include the following, grouped roughly by area. Cambridge-affiliated schools in Kolkata include every school on this list, with Calcutta International School also appearing to offer a Pearson Edexcel pathway alongside.

1. The Cambridge School (TCS)

Founded in 2003 and located at Kalighat in south Kolkata, TCS describes itself on its own admissions page as "Kolkata's oldest IGCSE school". It runs the full Cambridge Pathway from Primary through Cambridge A Levels, with a stated 1:20 student-teacher ratio. The school positions itself as budget-friendly relative to other international schools in the city.

2. Calcutta International School (CIS)

Established in 1953 and now on a 2-acre Anandapur campus (since 2006), CIS is one of the oldest and best-documented iGCSE schools in the city. It has been a Cambridge Direct Centre since 2005 and offers the full Cambridge Pathway; a third-party listing also cites a Pearson Edexcel pathway, which appears to make CIS the only Edexcel option in Kolkata (worth confirming directly with the school). Class 11-12 runs on either the IB Diploma Programme or A Levels. The student body is diverse, with the school citing around 17 nationalities.

3. The Heritage School

Founded in 2001 and set on a 9.5-acre campus at Chowbaga Road, Madurdaha, Heritage runs Cambridge Lower Secondary and iGCSE alongside ICSE/ISC and the IB Diploma Programme, making it one of the few tri-pathway schools in Kolkata. The school has been ranked first in West Bengal and Kolkata among co-ed day schools by EducationWorld, and runs 18-plus sports disciplines.

4. South City International School (SCIS)

Located at 375 Prince Anwar Shah Road in the Jadavpur / South City area, SCIS runs both a Cambridge wing (iGCSE plus A Level) and an ICSE/ISC pathway, and also offers AP (Advanced Placement) exams. The Cambridge wing publishes 22 subject options across English, Maths, Languages (including Bengali, Hindi, French and Mandarin), Humanities, Sciences and Creative subjects.

5. Modern High School International (MHSI)

MHSI is the international wing of the historic Modern High School for Girls (founded 1952). The international wing itself was set up in 2018 and formally inaugurated in December 2023 by Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan. Located at 78 Syed Amir Ali Avenue in Ballygunge, MHSI runs Cambridge iGCSE for ages 14-16 and the IB Diploma Programme for ages 16-19. Unlike the feeder MHSG, MHSI is co-educational.

6. Bridge International School

At 77/1 Hazra Road in the Ballygunge / Hazra area, Bridge was founded in 2003 and is managed by the Mohta Educational Society (registered 1973). The school advertises itself as the first school in Kolkata affiliated to Cambridge International Examinations. It runs Cambridge iGCSE and A Level as its senior pathway.

7. Adamas International School (AIS)

Adamas sits at Rathtala, Belghoria, in North 24 Parganas (north Kolkata). Established in 2004 and managed by the Sachis Kiran Roy Memorial Trust, it runs both Cambridge iGCSE and ICSE/ISC pathways, with PCM, PCB, Commerce and Arts streams available on the ISC side for Classes 11-12. It's also one of the few iGCSE schools in Kolkata with a boarding option: Adamas is a day-cum-boarding school.

8. GEMS Akademia International School (GAIS)

Set on a 20-acre campus at Bakrahat Road, Thakurpukur, GEMS Akademia opened in 2009 and is part of the global GEMS Education network, which operates schools in around a dozen countries. The school runs Cambridge iGCSE and Cambridge International AS/A Level, with a CBSE alternative pathway available. It offers both day and residential (boarding) options, one of the boarding-capable iGCSE schools in the city alongside Adamas. GEMS Akademia publishes that "GEMS students have been accepted into 860 universities in 46 countries" over the last four years.

9. Vidyanjali High School

Vidyanjali is at 20/1, Ram Mohan Dutta Road, Bhowanipore. It began life in 1945 as Shree Bhawanipur Gujarati Balmandir and now runs both a Cambridge track (iGCSE plus AS/A Level) and the West Bengal state board (Madhyamik) alongside for Classes IX-XII. The school states that it is the only centre in Eastern India for the Cambridge Professional Development Qualification Programme, which is a teacher-training accreditation rather than a student qualification, but signals a mature CAIE relationship.

Studying for iGCSE with Cognito

Cognito is an online learning platform used by iGCSE and GCSE students preparing for Cambridge and Edexcel exams. Whichever Kolkata school you end up at, our library of short concept videos, spaced-repetition flashcards and past-paper practice covers the core iGCSE Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science) and iGCSE Maths in depth.

A few things students in Kolkata find useful. First, the video library is organised by specification point, so you can match what your teacher covered that week and revise the exact sub-topic. Second, the flashcards use active recall and spaced repetition, which tends to work better than re-reading textbooks. Third, past-paper questions are tagged by topic, so you can focus on a specific area rather than sit an entire paper. All of that runs in the browser, which fits around a school timetable.

You can try Cognito for free at cognitoedu.org.
