Question 1

What does AQA GCSE English Literature cover?

Accepted Answer

AQA GCSE English Literature (spec 8702) is built around four areas of study: a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a modern prose or drama text, and a poetry anthology cluster, with unseen poetry also assessed in the exam.

Your school chooses one text from each category, so you study one of six Shakespeare plays (such as Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet), one of seven 19th-century novels (such as A Christmas Carol or Jane Eyre), one of twelve modern texts (such as An Inspector Calls or Lord of the Flies), and one of three thematically linked poetry clusters, each containing 15 poems. The skills AQA tests across all of this are reading and responding to texts (AO1), analysing language, form and structure (AO2), understanding historical and social context (AO3), and writing accurately (AO4).

One important thing to know early on: this is a closed-book exam, which means no texts are allowed in the room and memorising key quotations from your set texts is a central part of revision. Our notes are built to help you understand your texts deeply and develop the analytical writing skills that AQA rewards across both papers.

Question 2

What are the assessment objectives for AQA GCSE English Literature?

Accepted Answer

There are four assessment objectives (AOs) for AQA GCSE English Literature (8702), and knowing their weightings helps you focus your revision where the marks really are.

| AO | What it tests | Overall weighting |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | Read, understand and respond to texts; maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response | 37.5% |
| AO2 | Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology | 42.5% |
| AO3 | Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written | 15% |
| AO4 | Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation | 5% |

AO2 is the weightiest objective at 42.5%, so close analysis of a writer's language choices sits at the heart of every strong answer. AO3 (context) carries 15% and is often underpractised, our notes walk you through how to weave historical and social context into your responses without letting it overshadow your textual analysis.

Question 3

Where should I start with GCSE English Literature revision?

Accepted Answer

Since this is a closed-book exam, memorising well-chosen quotes from your set texts is a genuine priority from day one. Our notes walk through each text with the kind of close analysis that maps directly onto AO2, which is the heaviest assessment objective at 42.5% of your total marks.

We'd suggest starting with whichever set text you find most challenging, since getting comfortable with language analysis early gives you a transferable skill that helps across every paper. From there, building a quote bank using spaced retrieval (returning to those quotes regularly over days and weeks rather than all at once) is one of the most effective ways to make them stick for the exam room.

Paper 2 carries 60% of your total marks and covers your modern text, poetry anthology, and unseen poetry, so it's worth giving it a generous share of your revision time alongside Paper 1.

Question 4

What's on AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 1 and Paper 2?

Accepted Answer

AQA GCSE English Literature (8702) splits its assessment across two written exams, and both are closed book, meaning texts are not allowed in the exam room, so building up a bank of key quotations is an important part of your revision.

| Paper | Topics covered | Length | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel | Section A: one question on your Shakespeare play (extract + whole text); Section B: one question on your 19th-century novel (extract + whole text) | 1 hour 45 minutes | 40% |
| Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry | Section A: one essay (choice of two) on your modern prose or drama text; Section B: one comparative question on a named anthology poem plus one other from your cluster; Section C: analysis and comparison of two unseen poems | 2 hours 15 minutes | 60% |

Paper 2 carries the larger share of your overall mark, so giving your modern text, poetry anthology, and unseen poetry skills plenty of attention is well worth it. Our notes walk through each section's requirements in detail, so you can go into the exam knowing exactly what each question is asking you to do.

Question 5

Can I use these notes as my AQA GCSE English Literature textbook?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Our notes are designed to cover everything you need for AQA GCSE English Literature (8702), walking you through the key themes, characters, language analysis, and context for your set texts. Since this is a closed-book exam, you won't be able to take your texts in with you on the day, so our notes are especially useful for building a strong mental map of each text and gathering the key quotations worth memorising. We'd suggest working through our notes actively, perhaps using the blurt technique to write out everything you can recall about a topic before checking back, which really helps the material stick when it comes to writing under exam conditions.

Question 6

How do I get a grade 9 in AQA GCSE English Literature?

Accepted Answer

Aiming for a grade 9 in AQA GCSE English Literature (8702) is achievable with a clear understanding of the assessment objectives, particularly AO2 (analysing language, form and structure), which carries 42.5% of the total marks, though the exact grade boundary shifts each year so we'd suggest checking AQA's website rather than targeting a fixed percentage.

In practice, a grade 9 response usually looks something like this:

- **Strong AO2 analysis:** Going beyond spotting techniques to explaining precisely how a writer's choices of language, form and structure create specific effects on the reader.
- **An informed personal response (AO1):** Maintaining a clear, well-evidenced argument throughout each essay rather than retelling what happens in the text.
- **Memorised key quotes:** The exam is closed book, so building a bank of precise quotations across all your set texts is essential, and our notes help you identify the most useful ones to revisit through active recall.
- **Contextual depth (AO3):** Weaving relevant historical or social context naturally into your analysis, since AO3 carries 15% of the marks and is often underpracticed.
- **Paper 2 stamina:** With Paper 2 worth 60% of your GCSE, building confidence across modern texts, the poetry anthology, and unseen poetry is where the biggest gains are available.
