Question 1

When should I start doing AQA GCSE English Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

The best approach is to start using past-paper questions by topic from early in your course, and then build up to full papers as your May/June exams get closer.

Our by-topic exam practice lets you work through questions on your Shakespeare text, your poetry cluster or your modern text as soon as you've studied that content. This kind of spaced retrieval builds confidence without waiting until everything is "finished."

We'd suggest saving 2–3 complete papers for your final weeks of revision (including any school mocks), so you can experience both Paper 1 (1 hour 45 minutes) and Paper 2 (2 hours 15 minutes) in full. That way the real thing feels familiar, and you can spot which sections still need attention before exam day.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number that fits every student, but working through past papers is most useful once you feel secure on the content and key quotes for your set texts. Because AQA GCSE English Literature is a closed-book exam, getting comfortable writing without your texts in front of you is a big part of the preparation, so we'd suggest using our exam practice to build that confidence first.

Spacing your past paper attempts across your revision period (rather than cramming them all at once) helps the skills stick more reliably. Review your answers carefully against the mark scheme each time, since that reflection is where most of the learning happens.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising under realistic time pressure is one of the most valuable things you can do in the run-up to your exams, because pacing across two papers totalling 4 hours is harder than it looks.

We'd suggest building up gradually: use our exam practice to work through individual questions first, so you feel confident with what each section demands before tackling a full paper. When you're ready for a complete run, Paper 1 is 1 hour 45 minutes and Paper 2 is 2 hours 15 minutes, so you'll want to feel comfortable managing your time across all three sections of Paper 2 in particular. It's also worth keeping in mind that this is a closed-book exam, so using our flashcards to get your key quotes secure before you work through papers will make the whole experience much more useful.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper can feel discouraging, but it's genuinely useful information about where to focus your revision next. We'd suggest looking at which assessment objective cost you the most marks: AO2 (analysing language, form and structure) carries 42.5% of the overall marks, so if your responses are describing what happens rather than analysing how a writer creates effects, that's the area to work through first.

Our notes walk through the key language and structural features for each set text, and our flashcards are great for building a bank of quotations using active recall (especially important since this is a closed-book exam where no texts are allowed in the room). We'd also suggest checking your AO3 responses, as contextual understanding is something many students underpractise relative to its weighting. Our exam practice lets you focus on the specific sections where you dropped marks and see what a stronger response looks like.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

AQA's English Literature mark schemes use a levels-of-response approach for all the extended writing questions, meaning rather than ticking off individual points, you match your whole answer against a set of level descriptors that describe the quality of response overall. Download the mark scheme for your past paper directly from aqa.org.uk/pastpapers, read each descriptor carefully, and decide honestly which level best fits what you wrote.

The four assessment objectives are your framework as you self-assess: AO1 covers your personal response and use of quotations; AO2 is your analysis of language, form and structure with subject terminology; AO3 is your understanding of context; and AO4 covers accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar. We'd suggest annotating your own essay with AO labels before you open the mark scheme, since that kind of active recall makes the feedback stick far better than simply reading a grade and moving on.

Our exam practice includes worked examples showing how a strong response addresses each AO, so comparing your attempts against those alongside the official mark scheme is a really effective combination.
