Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in AQA GCSE Chemistry?

Accepted Answer

Six-mark open response questions can feel daunting, but once you understand how they're marked it becomes much more manageable. These questions use levels-of-response marking, which means the examiner reads your whole answer and judges the overall quality of your reasoning, rather than counting individual points.

To reach the top level, your answer needs to go beyond recalling facts (AO1) and apply that knowledge to the specific scenario in the question (AO2), linking ideas together in a logical, structured way. AQA also rewards precise scientific terminology throughout, so using correct chemical vocabulary and balanced equations where relevant will strengthen your response.

We'd suggest spending a minute planning before you write, noting which chemical ideas connect, so your answer reads as a coherent argument rather than a list. Our exam practice includes open response questions with mark-scheme guidance, so you can see what a top-level answer looks like and use active recall to build your own.

Question 2

What do the levels in the AQA GCSE Chemistry mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels-of-response marking is AQA's approach to the longer "open response" questions you'll find in both papers: instead of awarding one mark per correct point, the examiner reads your whole answer and places it into a level based on the overall quality of your scientific reasoning.

Higher levels reward answers that go beyond recalling facts (AO1) to also apply knowledge and understanding (AO2) and analyse or evaluate evidence (AO3). All three assessment objectives are tested across both Chemistry papers, so a top-level answer typically weaves all three together rather than just listing information.

The number of levels and the marks available vary from question to question, so working through our exam practice is a great way to see what separates a partial answer from a full-marks one.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice and past papers complement each other, but they serve different purposes. Our exam practice is organised by topic, so you can focus on specific areas like Quantitative chemistry or Energy changes and build confidence there before moving on. Past papers are the official AQA exams in their original format, with questions drawn from across all 10 topics in an unpredictable mix that mirrors what you'll see on the day. We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice to consolidate each area as you go (spaced retrieval works really well here), then turning to full past papers once you feel ready across the whole spec to get used to the real question mix and the 1 hour 45 minute timing for each paper.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Each paper gives you 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes) for 100 marks, which works out to just over a minute per mark, so that ratio is your most reliable guide throughout the paper.

A 1-mark recall question warrants about a minute, while a 6-mark extended response warrants around six minutes of thought and writing. We'd suggest always checking the mark allocation printed next to each question part before you start writing, as it signals both how long to spend and how much detail the examiner expects. Our exam practice questions mirror the real paper format, so working through them regularly is a great way to build an instinctive sense of pace.
