Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Cambridge International (CIE) A-Level Biology?

Accepted Answer

Six-mark questions in CIE A-Level Biology typically test your ability to construct a detailed, well-organised response that demonstrates both knowledge and reasoning. These questions often use command words like "explain" or "discuss" and are marked using levels-of-response, the examiner places your answer into a level (typically 1–3) based on how well you've addressed the question.

**Structure your answer logically.** Start by identifying the key points you need to cover, then develop each one with scientific detail. Link your points together rather than listing them in isolation, examiners reward coherence.

**Use precise terminology from the specification.** If the question is about enzymes, mention active sites, enzyme-substrate complexes and activation energy. If it's about transport, name the specific mechanisms (facilitated diffusion, active transport, osmosis) rather than vague descriptions.

**Support statements with reasoning.** Don't just describe, explain *why* or *how*.

Question 2

What do the levels in the Cambridge International (CIE) A-Level Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Cambridge International (CIE) mark schemes use a "levels of response" system for longer-answer questions. Each level represents a band of marks, with clear criteria describing what a candidate needs to demonstrate to reach that level. Lower levels typically reward basic recall or partial answers, while higher levels require more complete explanations, precise use of terminology, and well-structured responses that fully address the question.

Our exam practice includes mark schemes for every question, so you can see exactly what examiners are looking for at each level and practise writing answers that hit the top bands.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Past papers are released exam questions from previous years. Our exam practice uses the same question style and difficulty, but every question is brand new, you won't find them anywhere else.

**Why that matters:** past papers are brilliant for final revision, but once you've worked through them, you run out. Our exam practice gives you unlimited questions, so you can keep practising by topic as you learn. You can also retake questions you found tricky, which is hard to do with past papers once you've memorised the answers.

Both are valuable, we'd suggest using our exam practice alongside your revision to build confidence on each topic, then using past papers under timed conditions closer to the exam.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Time management in your Biology exams depends on the paper you're sitting and how many marks each question is worth. The general rule is to aim for **roughly one minute per mark**, so a 6-mark question deserves about 6 minutes, a 2-mark question about 2 minutes, and so on.

**Papers 1 and 2** (MCQ and AS structured questions, 1 hour 15 minutes each) move quickly: you'll need to keep pace to finish. **Paper 3** (practical, 2 hours for 40 marks) gives you more breathing room per question. **Papers 4 and 5** (A-Level structured and planning/analysis, 2 hours and 1 hour 15 minutes respectively) fall somewhere in between.

We'd suggest practising with timed past papers on our exam practice tab to build up your sense of pace. If you're spending too long on one question, flag it and move on, you can always come back if time allows.
