AP (Advanced Placement) score calculators take a raw multiple-choice question (MCQ) and free-response question (FRQ) count and estimate what it would translate to on the 1 to 5 scale. They're useful for gauging where you stand while working through practice exams, but they're estimates: The official conversion changes year to year, and College Board doesn't publish the exact cutoffs.

The three steps: Raw, composite, scaled
Every AP exam goes through the same three-step scoring process, even though the details vary by subject:
- Raw scores. Your MCQ raw score is the number of questions you got right (there's no penalty for wrong answers on AP exams; blanks and wrong answers both score zero). Your FRQ raw score is the sum of the points awarded by the human graders, out of the maximum for each question.
- Composite score. The two raw scores get combined into a single weighted composite. Each section is worth a set percentage of the exam, and the raw numbers are rescaled so they add together into one total.
- Scaled score (1 to 5). The composite is then mapped to the 1 to 5 scale using cutoffs set by College Board for that specific year's exam.
That final mapping is the part most students find confusing, because the cutoffs aren't fixed.
Section weightings vary by subject
The MCQ-to-FRQ split isn't the same across every AP exam. Most sciences and languages split 50/50, but a few subjects lean much more heavily on one side.

Because psychology is roughly two-thirds MCQ, a strong performance on the multiple-choice section pulls the composite up faster than it would in biology, where the two halves are equal. Check the AP Central page for your specific subject to confirm the split before doing any raw-score math.
Why the cutoffs shift year to year
College Board uses a process called equating to keep AP scores comparable across years. A 5 on this year's exam should represent the same level of achievement as a 5 on last year's exam, even if this year's paper was slightly harder or easier.
What this means in practice: If a year's exam is unusually difficult, the composite cutoff for a 5 drops a bit. If it's unusually easy, the cutoff moves up. The scaled score you receive is meant to be a fair reflection of your mastery of the course, not a fixed percentage of the specific paper you sat.
This is why any "you need X% for a 5" claim should be hedged. Historical patterns suggest the cutoff for a 5 typically sits around 65 to 75% of the composite for most subjects, and the cutoff for a 3 (the "qualified" threshold) often lands somewhere near 40 to 55%. Exact boundaries vary year to year and by subject. Rules of thumb like "you need 75% for a 5" work for rough planning but not for anything precise. Any calculator claiming to predict your exact 1 to 5 from a raw score is estimating with published historical data.

AP multiple-choice sections use rights-only scoring: You get a point for each correct answer and zero for wrong or blank answers. There's no negative marking, so you should answer every question, including guesses on ones you're unsure about.
Most AP MCQ sections range from 40 to 75 questions depending on the subject. AP Biology has 60 MCQs, AP Chemistry has 60, AP Psychology has 75, and AP Calculus AB has 42. Your raw MCQ score is simply how many you got right out of that total.
A useful drill during prep is to time yourself on old MCQ sections and track your accuracy under exam conditions. Practice exams from previous years are the best predictor of your actual MCQ raw score.
How FRQ scoring works
FRQs are graded by trained College Board readers (typically high school AP teachers and college professors) during a week-long reading event in June. Each reader marks against a rubric that lists specific points to earn.
On AP Biology, for example, the FRQ section has two long questions worth 9 points each and four short questions worth 4 points each, for a maximum of 34 raw FRQ points. On AP Chemistry, three long questions are worth 10 points each and four short questions are worth 4 points each. The rubric is unforgiving about wording in some subjects (biology in particular expects specific vocabulary) and more flexible about approach in others (math and physics reward correct method even with wrong final numbers).
Because the rubric is point-by-point, you can pick up marks on questions you couldn't fully solve as long as you show correct reasoning on individual parts.
Using unofficial AP score calculators
Several websites (AP Pass, Albert.io, and others) publish subject-specific calculators that let you plug in your MCQ correct count and estimated FRQ points to get a predicted 1 to 5. These are useful for a few purposes:
- Gauging where a practice exam puts you on the scale.
- Setting a target: If you know you need to gain 8 raw MCQ points to move from a projected 3 to a projected 4, that changes your prep priorities.
- Sanity-checking your own estimate of how well an FRQ went.
What they can't do is predict your actual exam-day score with precision. The published cutoffs they use are based on past-year data or leaked information from AP teachers who've attended College Board's grading sessions. This year's specific cutoffs won't be known until scores are released, so anything a calculator tells you is a best-guess reference point, not a firm prediction. Don't tie your prep strategy to a single calculator estimate. If two different calculators disagree by a full point (a 3 versus a 4), that spread is a fair reflection of how much uncertainty is in these predictions.
What to do with the estimate
The main value of a score calculator is not the predicted number, it's the diagnostic. If you're projected as a 3, the calculator can usually tell you whether that's because your MCQ accuracy is low or because your FRQ points are thin. Those two problems have different fixes.
Low MCQ accuracy usually means more content review and more timed MCQ practice.
