A few things to notice. 2021 was an unusually tough year: Only 7.4% of students scored a 5, likely reflecting pandemic-era learning disruption. From there, the top-score rate climbed year on year, peaking at 18.9% in 2025 before dropping back to about 15% in 2026. The percentage of 1s has fallen from around 12% in 2023 to about 8% in 2026, so the bottom of the distribution has stayed relatively benign even as the top compressed.

The College Board doesn't publish official raw-score-to-scaled-score conversion tables. The cutoffs shift year to year based on exam difficulty and how the score is calibrated across the cohort. Analysis from major prep providers (based on released practice exams and their internal data) suggests some rough patterns.
A raw score of roughly 70-75% of the total available points has typically been enough for a 5 in recent years, though the exact percentage varies annually. That translates to strong performance across both sections, you can't rely on nailing the multiple choice while bombing the FRQs, or vice versa.
For a 4, students have typically needed roughly 55-65% of the total points. For a 3, roughly 40-50%.
These are approximations. The safer way to plan is to aim to get every question you know cold, avoid careless errors on the parts you're strong at, and pick up as many rubric points as possible on the FRQs, even partial-credit points add up quickly across 6 questions.
Never state 'you need X% for a 5' as a rule. The cutoff varies year to year, and the College Board deliberately calibrates it. Aim for 75%+ across both sections and you're safely in 5 territory in most years.
What actually separates a 5 from a 4
Getting a 5 vs a 4 in AP Bio usually isn't about knowing more content. Most 4-scoring students know the content. What separates them is FRQ execution, and specifically three things.
First, hitting task verbs correctly. A lot of 4s are 5s that lost points because they explained when the question said describe, or described when it said justify. Underline the task verb before writing.
Second, specific vocabulary. The FRQ rubrics are scanning for particular terms, organelle names, molecular names, process names. A 4-answer says "the membrane changes"; a 5-answer says "the phospholipid bilayer becomes more fluid as temperature rises".
Third, showing work on quantitative parts. Even a wrong final answer on a Hardy-Weinberg or chi-square problem can pick up 1-2 partial credit points if the setup and substitution are shown clearly. 4-scorers often skip the working.

How AP Biology compares to other AP sciences
AP Biology sits in the middle of the AP science score distributions. AP Chemistry has traditionally had a lower 5 rate (often around 10-15%), while AP Physics 1's 5-rate has climbed sharply in recent years, sitting around 19-20% in 2026 after years of hovering closer to 10%. AP Environmental Science and AP Physics 2 also tend to run slightly higher 5 rates than AP Bio. Direct year-on-year comparisons are tricky because different exams have different cohorts and content models.
What matters more than comparative difficulty is what you personally need the score for. Many US universities award course credit or advanced standing for a 4 or 5, some accept a 3, and a small number don't accept AP credit at all. Check the credit policies of the specific colleges you're applying to before deciding what score to aim for, a 4 might unlock the same credit as a 5 at your target school, in which case aiming for a 4 (and using the saved study time on other subjects) is a reasonable strategy.

- Time your FRQ practice - 90 minutes for 6 questions, no exceptions
- Score yourself against the official rubric, not your own sense of 'that was fine'
- Prioritize revision by unit weighting (Units 3, 6, 7 first)
- Draw pathway diagrams from memory - respiration, photosynthesis, signaling
- Practice Hardy-Weinberg and chi-square problems every week from January onwards
- Do at least 2 full-length practice exams under exam conditions in the last month
- Use the formula sheet during practice so you're comfortable navigating it on exam day
