specification overview

SQA National 5 Physics is the Scottish equivalent of GCSE-level Physics, covering three areas of study: Dynamics and Space; Electricity and Energy; Waves and Radiation. It's assessed by one 2-hour externally-marked question paper (110 marks, worth 80%) plus an Assignment (20 marks, 20%), graded A-D or No Award.

key tips for success

  • Learn physics equations cold

SQA provides some equations but many must be memorised. Know: v=u+at, F=ma, W=mg, Ek, Ep, work done, power, current/voltage/resistance, wave speed, specific heat capacity.

  • Practise past exam papers

SQA past papers are widely available. Do timed practice for the 2-hour exam. Section 1 (objective test, 20 marks) needs speed; Section 2 (90 marks) needs stamina.

  • Master space physics

National 5 has explicit space physics content: cosmology, life cycle of stars, space exploration. Learn key facts and applications.

  • Structure the Assignment carefully

Assignment is 20% and externally marked. Choose a topic you understand well, follow SQA's structure: aim, method, results/data, analysis, conclusion. Include diagrams and cited sources.

  • Learn unit conversions

Physics needs unit conversion fluency. Drill until automatic.

  • Master specific heat capacity calculations

SHC is a favourite exam topic. Learn E=cmΔT, practise heat energy calculations for different materials and situations.
