specification overview

OCR GCSE Physics B: Twenty First Century Science (J259) is a two-tier linear qualification. Each tier sits two 1h 45m written papers of 90 marks (50% each): a Breadth in physics paper and a Depth in physics paper. Foundation: J259/01 (Breadth) and J259/02 (Depth). Higher: J259/03 (Breadth) and J259/04 (Depth). Both papers in each tier assess content from all 8 chapters (P1-P8), including Ideas about Science and Practical Skills.

Learners sit either the Foundation pair (J259/01 + J259/02) or the Higher pair (J259/03 + J259/04). Both papers in each tier draw on all 8 chapters: the Breadth paper samples the specification broadly; the Depth paper uses fewer, longer questions to probe deeper understanding. OCR 21st Century Science is context-led, delivered through real-world scenarios and issues. Both papers assess Practical Skills (Chapter P8) via OCR's 8 Practical Activity Groups (PAG1-PAG8, approximately 15% of marks).

key tips for success

  • Learn Physics equations cold

Higher tier has reduced equation sheet. Learn: KE, GPE, work done, power, current/voltage/resistance, density, wave speed.

  • Master PAGs (Practical Activity Groups)

OCR uses PAGs to structure practical work. Learn method, expected results, sources of error for each PAG. Exam questions worth ~15% of marks.

  • Learn context-led framing plus Ideas about Science

21st Century Science delivers content through real-world contexts (climate, medical imaging, transport) alongside a dedicated Ideas about Science strand (Chapter P7) that runs across every content chapter. Learn how physics applies to each context, not just abstract theory.

  • Practise 6-mark essays

Both papers have 6-mark essays. Reward: clear points, developed explanation, evaluation. Practise the structure.

  • Learn unit conversions

Physics needs unit conversion fluency: J to kJ, W to kW, m to km, s to ms. Drill until automatic.

  • Master calculations with rearrangement

Many questions require equation rearrangement before substitution. Practise rearranging under time pressure.
