Learners sit either the Foundation pair (Paper 1 + Paper 2) or the Higher pair (Paper 3 + Paper 4). OCR Gateway integrates 'global challenges' (P8) as a synoptic topic drawing on physics content applied to real-world contexts. Paper 2 and Paper 4 include additional synoptic assessment. Both papers in each tier assess practical skills (Topic P9, ~15% of marks) via OCR's 8 Practical Activity Groups (PAGs).

key tips for success

  • Learn Physics equations cold

Higher tier has reduced equation sheet. Learn: KE, GPE, work done, power, current/voltage/resistance, density, wave speed.

  • Master PAGs (Practical Activity Groups)

OCR uses PAGs to structure practical work. Learn method, expected results, sources of error for each PAG. Exam questions worth ~15% of marks.

  • Practise 6-mark essays

Both papers have 6-mark essays. Reward: clear points, developed explanation, evaluation. Practise the structure.

  • Learn P8 global challenges

P8 is synoptic, drawing on P1-P7 content in real-world contexts. Learn how physics applies to transport, energy resources, climate change, astronomy.

  • Learn unit conversions

Physics needs unit conversion fluency: J to kJ, W to kW, m to km, s to ms. Drill until automatic.

  • Master calculations with rearrangement

Many questions require equation rearrangement before substitution. Practise rearranging under time pressure.
