All three papers must be sat at the same tier. Foundation grades 5-1, Higher grades 9-4 with safety net grade 3. There is no formulae sheet at the start of the papers: the specification lists formulae students must memorise, and the small number they are not expected to memorise (e.g. volume/surface area of a sphere and cone, kinematics formulae) are printed within the relevant question. Formulae sheets were a temporary Covid-recovery measure for the 2022 and 2023 series only.

key tips for success

  • Master non-calculator arithmetic

Paper 1 (33.3%) is non-calculator. Drill: long multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, percentages, standard form. Speed matters.

  • Learn key formulas cold

AQA gives a few formulas within the question; you must memorise the rest. Know: quadratic formula, sine rule, cosine rule and area = 1/2 ab sin C (Higher), circle circumference and area, Pythagoras, trigonometric ratios.

  • Practise problem-solving structure

AO3 (25-30%) rewards problem-solving. Multi-step questions need: read, plan, work through step-by-step, check units, check reasonableness.

  • Master algebra manipulation (Higher)

Higher tier rewards fluent algebra: factorising quadratics, completing the square, algebraic fractions. Drill until automatic.

  • Learn circle theorems (Higher)

Higher tier tests circle theorems (commonly listed as 7-8 named results; the spec doesn't publish a fixed count). Typical ones include: angle at centre = 2x angle at circumference, angles in the same segment, cyclic quadrilateral, alternate segment. Learn them and practise applying.

  • Practise past papers under time

AQA past papers are widely available. Do timed practice for all 3 papers. Watch time-per-mark (roughly 1.1 minutes per mark).
