key tips for success

  • Plan your unit staging early

Papers are available in January and June. Decide which units go in which series so you're not sitting all four at once.

  • Choose your Unit 4 option carefully

Unit 4 has four options (Tectonic Activity/Hazards, Feeding the World's People, Cultural Diversity: People and Landscapes, Human Health/Disease). Pick one that plays to your interests; pre-release focus questions guide research before the exam.

  • Build a case-study bank

All units reward specific case studies with named places, statistics and details. Build a bank of ~10 well-detailed case studies across topics and scales.

  • Master quantitative and mapping skills

AO3 is 18-20% and includes stats, map interpretation and photo/data analysis. Practise until automatic.

  • Know the difference between IAS and IAL

Units 1-2 make up the International Advanced Subsidiary (IAS). Adding units 3-4 gives you the full IAL.

  • Practise the extended-response format on Unit 3

Unit 3 includes an extended-response synoptic essay. Practise structuring essays with argument, case-study evidence and evaluative judgement.
