key tips for success

  • Practise the MCQ format

Component 03 opens with 30 marks of multiple choice (30 questions in about 40 minutes). It's the only paper with an MCQ section, so practise the pace separately so it doesn't eat into your Section B time.

  • Master diagram technique

Supply/demand, cost curves, AD/AS, market structures, foreign exchange. Every essay benefits from a clean labelled diagram. Practise drawing them fast.

  • Prepare for Component 03 synoptic style

Component 03 pulls micro and macro together on real-world contexts. Practise linking firm behaviour to macro objectives, and market failure to policy responses.

  • Build a bank of real-world examples

Follow the economics news throughout the year (FT, The Economist, BBC Business). Recent examples of monetary policy, inflation, trade policy or firm strategy elevate essay answers.

  • Structure essays with clear judgement

AO4 is 25% and rewards evaluation. Every essay needs a defensible conclusion backed by weighted arguments.

  • Know the market structure diagrams

Perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly. Practise SR/LR equilibrium and assumptions for each.
