Study skills for secondary school: The techniques that really work

Most students never get taught how to study. You get taught the content, then you get told to "revise", which usually ends up meaning re-reading notes, highlighting a textbook, or watching videos on repeat. It feels like work, so it must be working. Except the research suggests it mostly is not.

The techniques that pay off tend to be the ones that feel uncomfortable: Trying to remember things without looking, testing yourself before you feel ready, coming back to the same topic days or weeks apart. None of it is glamorous, but the research keeps backing it up. This guide walks through the study skills that hold up under research from Year 7 through to A-Level, and they apply across every subject in our GCSE catalogue. Note-taking: Cornell for lessons, PEEL for essays

Notes are only useful if you go back to them. The main mistake is transcribing everything the teacher says, ending up with pages nobody wants to re-read. Good notes are shorter, structured, and designed to be revised from later.

The Cornell method

Cornell notes have been around since the 1950s because they force you to process what you are writing rather than transcribe it.

Split your page into three sections: a wide right column for main notes, a narrow left column for cues, and a strip at the bottom for a summary. Take notes in the right column during the lesson. Afterwards, fill in the left column with cue questions or key terms, and write a two or three sentence summary in your own words.

When you revise, cover the right column and use the cues on the left to test what you remember. That single change turns your notes from a passive record into an active recall tool.

PEEL for essay subjects

PEEL (point, evidence, explanation, link) is the standard paragraph structure for essay subjects like English, History, RS, Geography, and Psychology. It forces every paragraph to argue something rather than list information.

Point: One clear sentence saying what the paragraph is about. Evidence: A quote, statistic, event, or source. Explanation: What the evidence shows and why it supports your point. Link: Tie back to the question or forward to your next paragraph. Build PEEL into your notes too, so a key quote comes with a point and one line of explanation.

Do a five-minute review of the day's notes the same evening. Notes reviewed within 24 hours stick far better than notes left cold for a week.

Active recall: The single biggest upgrade to your revision

Active recall means testing yourself on material rather than re-reading it. Every time you try to pull a fact out of your head without looking, you are using active recall. Cognitive scientists call this the testing effect, and it has been replicated across hundreds of studies.

Retrieving strengthens the pathway to that memory more than re-reading ever could. Re-reading creates familiarity that tricks your brain into thinking it knows something; active recall exposes the gap between what you recognise and what you can produce.

Flashcards

Flashcards are the most portable form of active recall. Question on one side, answer on the other. Test yourself, be honest about what you got right and wrong, and sort the hard ones into a "revisit soon" pile.

Write one idea per card, not a mini-essay. Use your own words. For diagram-heavy subjects, sketch on the back and test yourself by drawing from memory. Apps like Anki and Quizlet handle scheduling, but paper cards are just as effective.

Blurting

Blurting is the most brutal form of active recall and also one of the most useful. Read a topic for two to three minutes, then close it and write down everything you can remember on a blank sheet. When you have exhausted your memory, go back and add what you missed in a different colour. Those gaps are what you need to focus on next.

Teach-back

Explain a topic out loud, in plain English, as if you were teaching it to someone who knows nothing about it. Ideally to a real person, but the bedroom wall works too. The moment you stumble or have to say "and then something happens with the electrons, I think" is a gap. Go back, learn it, teach it again.

Spaced practice: Why cramming loses

Spaced practice means revisiting material multiple times with growing gaps between reviews. Instead of studying one topic hard for a week and never returning to it, you touch it today, in three days, in a week, in two weeks. The research goes back to Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s.

The most efficient schedule is not "biology for eight hours on Saturday". It is thirty minutes today, thirty on Tuesday, twenty next Friday, which is the same total time with better retention. Active recall tells you how to revise; spaced practice tells you when. Our guide to making a revision timetable shows how to build spacing into a real week.

If a topic feels easy, stretch the gap before your next review. If you struggle, tighten the gap. Give more attention to the topics that are hardest, not the ones you already know.

Good to know

Interleaving: Mixing topics rather than blocking

Most students revise in blocks: All the maths in one session, then physics tomorrow. Interleaving mixes it up. In GCSE maths, instead of ten algebra questions followed by ten geometry questions, you jumble them. It feels harder, but studies by Rohrer and Taylor found better performance on later tests. Interleaving forces you to work out which method to apply, which is closer to what happens in an exam.

Mix topics within a session. For essay subjects, mix eras or texts. For sciences, mix biology, chemistry, and physics rather than doing each in a solid block.


Past papers: The most underused study tool

Past papers are one of the best study tools once you have covered a topic. Start with topic-specific questions before whole papers: Once you have covered photosynthesis, do every photosynthesis question across the last five years. This gives you active recall practice and teaches you the command words that keep showing up.

Mark your own work using the official mark scheme; this is where most of the learning happens. Notice the specific words examiners want (transfer of energy, valid conclusion, use of quotation) and start using them. Do timed papers in the run-up to mocks, and keep a mistakes log listing every question you got wrong, why, and what to do differently. Reviewing the log before an exam beats re-reading notes.


The techniques research says do not work well

Dunlosky et al. published a widely cited review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest (2013), ranking common study techniques by evidence. Some of the most popular scored surprisingly low. If they are your main strategy, you are working harder than you need to for less payoff.

The takeaway is not "never highlight anything again". Highlighting is fine as a way of marking what to test yourself on later; it is not, by itself, a study method.


Building a weekly study routine

Techniques only work if you use them, and a weekly routine turns them into a habit. For a Year 10 or 11 student in normal term time: Five to seven hours across the week, in thirty to forty minute focused blocks. Each block does one thing: A blurting session on biology, twenty French flashcards, three exam questions on quadratic equations. Mix subjects and come back to older topics using spaced practice. Pick two or three to try this week. Add more once these feel automatic.

  • Switch to Cornell notes for one subject and review them the same evening
  • Make one set of flashcards for a topic you find hard and test yourself twice this week
  • Try one blurting session on a topic from this term and see what gaps show up
  • Do one PEEL paragraph without notes and mark it against the exam mark scheme
  • Space out your review of a topic: Today, in three days, in a week
  • Start a mistakes log for one subject and read it before the next test

The habits that support all of this

No study technique survives a phone on the desk. Research from the University of Texas (Ward et al., 2017) found that just having a phone in the room, face down, reduced cognitive performance on complex tasks. Put yours in another room.

Sleep is where memory consolidates. Revise until 1am on five hours of sleep and most of it does not stick. Eight to ten hours a night beats an extra hour of revision almost every time. Routine beats motivation: Pick fixed times and treat them like appointments.
