GCSE Science is really three subjects sharing a name. Biology leans on recall, Chemistry mixes recall with mechanism, and Physics is calculation-heavy from start to finish. Revising all three the same way is the fastest route to burnout and mediocre grades.

How you split your time depends on whether you sit Combined Science (worth two GCSEs) or Triple Award (three separate GCSEs, one per subject). AQA calls Combined Science 'Trilogy' and it covers around two-thirds of the Triple content. Triple students have more depth but the same underlying structure of required practicals and the same command-word vocabulary.

This guide breaks down how to revise each of the three sciences based on the kind of thinking each one demands, how to work through the required practicals efficiently, and how to build a realistic revision plan that gives every subject the attention it needs. Combined Science vs Triple Award: What changes

The single biggest difference is scope. Triple students study more topics per subject and sit longer papers. Combined students cover fewer topics but still sit two papers per science.

The skills tested and the command words are identical, and the required practicals overlap heavily. What changes is the volume of content and the depth of the trickiest topics: Nuclear physics, organic chemistry, and homeostasis all get more detailed treatment in Triple.

If you sit Combined Science, your final grade is expressed as a pair (for example 7-7 or 6-5) across the two GCSEs. Triple students receive three separate grades. Either way, the revision principles that follow work for both routes: Adjust the depth to match your specification.

If you dislike a subject, look at what it demands rather than at your notes. A student who struggles with Physics but loves Biology is often trying to memorise Physics like it's Biology, when what Physics really needs is calculation practice.

Biology: Revising a recall-heavy subject

Biology has more terminology to memorise than the other two sciences combined. You have to know structures (organelles, organ systems), processes (respiration, photosynthesis, mitosis), and definitions (osmosis, active transport, homeostasis). None of this can be worked out from first principles: You either know it or you don't.

Active recall is the highest-return method here. Cover your notes and write out everything you can remember about a topic, then check what you missed. The other Biology pitfall is confusing similar-sounding processes. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration, arteries and veins, meiosis and mitosis: Students routinely swap these under exam pressure. Build a comparison table for each pair, listing the differences side by side, and revise the tables before moving on to any exam questions on those topics.


Chemistry: The middle ground

Chemistry sits between Biology and Physics. There is still a lot to remember (reaction equations, tests for gases and ions, definitions), but you also need to apply that knowledge to work out mechanisms and calculate quantities.

A reliable revision routine covers three tracks. First, memorise the essentials: The reactivity series, the ions and their charges, the state symbols, the qualitative tests. Second, practise balancing equations until you can do it without thinking. Third, work through the quantitative Chemistry (moles, concentration, percentage yield) with pen and paper, not just by reading examples. The higher tier of Combined and all of Triple lean heavily on mole calculations, so practise those specifically if you are aiming for a 7 or above.

Physics: Calculations, equations, and units

Physics is almost pure application. Most exam marks come from working with equations: Substituting values, rearranging formulae, and getting the units right. You can revise Physics for hours and still lose marks in the exam if you have not practised the actual arithmetic under time pressure.

Start by learning the equations you are not given on the equation sheet. AQA and Edexcel both provide equation sheets, but a portion of the equations must be memorised (your specification lists which). Write them out every day for a week and you will have them locked in. Then work through past-paper calculations methodically. Write the formula, substitute the numbers, calculate, and always include the unit. Marks are awarded for each step, so even if the final answer is wrong you can score most of the marks with a clear working out. Practising this discipline in revision means you do it automatically in the exam.

Required practicals: 21 for Combined, 28 for Triple

Every GCSE Science course includes required practicals, and exam questions test them every year. AQA Combined Science Trilogy has 21 in total: 7 biology, 6 chemistry, and 8 physics. Triple students sit 28 in total on AQA: 10 biology, 8 chemistry, and 10 physics. Edexcel and OCR use different totals but the principle is the same: Every listed practical is fair game.

You will not be asked to do the practical in the exam. You will be asked about it. Typical question types include: Describe the method, name the independent and dependent variables, identify a control variable, explain the expected result, and suggest an improvement to the method.

For each practical, be able to state four things from memory: The method in numbered steps, the three variable types (independent, dependent, control), the expected result or pattern, and the scientific explanation for that result. Command words: The vocabulary of the exam

Command words tell you exactly what to do with your knowledge. Every mark scheme is built around them. Confusing 'describe' with 'explain' is the single fastest way to lose marks even when you know the content. The four command words that come up most often in Science are state, describe, explain and evaluate. State asks for a fact (one sentence). Describe asks you to say what happens (no reasons needed). Explain asks you to say what happens AND why (use 'because', 'due to', 'this means that'). Evaluate asks you to weigh up evidence and give a conclusion.

Before you answer any Science question, underline or circle the command word. Then check your answer once you have finished writing: If the question says explain and there is no 'because' in your answer, you probably only described. Rewrite it before moving on.


Building a Science revision plan

The trap with three subjects is giving your time to whichever one feels easiest. It feels productive, but you are widening the gap between your strongest and weakest science. A balanced weekly plan gives each subject roughly equal time and forces you to work on the topics you avoid. Start by listing every topic in each specification and rating yourself from 1 (weakest) to 5 (strongest). Spend more time on the weak areas. Every fortnight, re-rate yourself and adjust the plan.

Mix subjects within a single day. Two hours of Biology followed by an hour of Physics keeps your brain fresh. A whole day on one subject leads to diminishing returns after the first couple of hours. Space out your practice: Revisit each topic every few days rather than cramming it once and moving on.

A framework that spreads your time across the three subjects and mixes recall with application. Adjust the balance based on which subject you find hardest.

Higher tier vs foundation tier: Choosing your prep level

Combined Science and each Triple subject are entered at either foundation tier or higher tier. Foundation tier caps your maximum grade at 5-5 (Combined) or grade 5 (Triple). Higher tier gives access to grades up to 9-9 (Combined) or grade 9 (Triple), with a small safety net below the lowest targeted grade.

On AQA higher tier, the lowest targeted grade is 4-4 (Combined) or grade 4 (Triple). If you fall just short of that boundary, there is a safety-net allowed grade: 4-3 on Combined Science, or grade 3 on the separate sciences. Only below that safety-net threshold is a paper ungraded (U). The safety net is deliberately narrow (roughly half the gap between the grade 5 and grade 4 boundaries), so higher tier still carries risk if you are borderline, but you will not automatically walk away with a U for missing grade 4 by a few marks.

Some content is higher-tier only, marked in the specification. Do not waste revision time on higher-tier content if you sit foundation, and do not skip it if you sit higher. Your teacher will have entered you for whichever tier suits your working level, but if you are unsure, ask which tier you are entered for and download the correct specification pages.
