The AP Psychology score chart is the conversion CollegeBoard uses to turn your raw exam performance into the 1-5 composite that lands in your July results. The redesigned AP Psych exam weights the multiple-choice section and the free-response questions (FRQs), applies a scaled-score formula, then compares the result to cutoffs CollegeBoard sets after the exam is scored.
One thing up front: CollegeBoard doesn't publish an official raw-to-composite table for AP Psych, and the redesign that hit in 2025 has shifted the underlying scoring math too. The numbers below are reconstructed from released practice questions and prep-provider analysis, not fixed rules, and they typically move a few points in either direction each year.
Typical AP Psych raw score to 1-5 mapping
| Composite score band | Approx. % of total points | AP score |
|---|---|---|
| Top band | Roughly 70%+ | 5 |
| Upper-middle | Roughly 58-69% | 4 |
| Middle | Roughly 45-57% | 3 |
| Lower | Roughly 32-44% | 2 |
| Bottom | Below ~32% | 1 |
Treat these as ballparks. AP Psych's redesign changed the FRQ format and the balance between MCQ and FRQ points, so any raw-score chart based on the pre-redesign exam should be checked against current CollegeBoard practice sets before you trust it.
Why the exact boundary varies
AP Psychology's cutoffs move for a few reasons. The multiple-choice section pulls from all 5 units, and the mix of research-methods questions vs pure content recall shifts year to year, which changes overall difficulty. The FRQs now include the article-analysis question and the evidence-based question, and rubric strictness on things like operational definitions and specific study citations can vary slightly each cycle as AP Readers are trained on each year's scoring guidelines.
Cohort strength matters too. AP Psych is one of the biggest AP subjects, with about 334,000 test-takers in 2025 and more than 379,000 in 2026, and CollegeBoard calibrates the cutoff so the meaning of a 5 stays stable. In the five pre-redesign years (2020-2024), the 5-rate ranged from about 14% to 22%. On the redesigned exam, 14.4% of students earned a 5 in 2025 (70.5% scored 3 or higher) and 15% earned a 5 in 2026 (74% scored 3 or higher).

AP Psychology draws many first-time AP students, and before the redesign more than a quarter of test-takers typically earned a 1. Since the redesign, results have been stronger: 70.5% scored 3 or higher in 2025 and 74% in 2026. The new FRQs reward precise application of research concepts and specific evidence, so FRQ execution matters.
The research-methods content thread now runs through both sections, so students who treated methods as a small standalone topic tend to underperform. Weak methods knowledge shows up as lost points on MCQs that look like content questions but really test experimental design, and on FRQs that ask you to identify a confound or evaluate operational definitions.
What raw score to target in practice
For a comfortable 5, aim to answer roughly 70-75% of the MCQs correctly and pick up most rubric points on both FRQs. The article-analysis FRQ rewards precise reading of the source, and the evidence-based FRQ rewards citing specific evidence from the sources and explaining it with psychological concepts. Missing 1-2 points on each FRQ still leaves room for a 5 if your MCQ performance is strong.
For a 4, roughly 58-65% MCQ accuracy plus solid partial credit on FRQs tends to land you there. For a 3, roughly 45-55% MCQ accuracy with basic FRQ engagement is often enough. The FRQs are the highest-leverage practice you can do in the last month, so if you're prioritizing revision time, timed FRQ practice against the official rubrics beats another pass of the textbook.
One last note on targeting: These bands assume you're aiming for a specific score, not a specific composite. If a target school gives credit for a 4 or a 5 equally, aiming for a comfortable 4 and using the saved study time on other subjects is often the better call. Check credit policies before you decide what to chase.
