The Article Analysis Question (AAQ) is one of the two free-response questions on the redesigned AP Psychology exam, introduced with the 2024-25 rewrite. Along with the EBQ, it replaced the older two-question FRQ format, and it asks you to read a summary of a real peer-reviewed study and answer questions about its method, variables, statistics, ethics and generalizability.
This article walks through what the AAQ asks, the rubric structure, and a worked example so you can see the moves that earn each point.
What the AAQ is
The AAQ gives you a summary of a published, peer-reviewed psychological study, usually with key statistics or a table of results. You answer 6 parts (A-F) about the study, worth a total of 7 points: Parts A-E are worth 1 point each and Part F is worth 2 points. The whole question is designed to take about 25 minutes.
The AAQ focuses on research skills: identifying the research method, operational definitions, interpreting statistics, ethics and generalizability. Part F (2 points) also asks you to connect the findings to a psychological idea, so course content still matters. Strong research methods knowledge will carry you through most of any AAQ, whatever the study's topic.
The 7-point rubric structure
The AAQ is scored across 6 lettered parts (A-F) for a total of 7 points. The task types have been consistent across the 2025 and 2026 exams:
A. Identify the research method used in the study. (1 point)
B. State the operational definition of a variable. (1 point)
C. Describe what a statistic in the study (for example, a mean difference or a statistically significant result) indicates. (1 point)
D. Identify at least one ethical guideline applied by the researchers. (1 point)
E. Explain the extent to which the findings are generalizable, using specific evidence from the study. (1 point)
F. Explain how at least one of the research findings supports or refutes a stated psychological idea or hypothesis. (2 points)
The exact wording is tailored to each study.
A worked example
Suppose the AAQ describes a study on sleep and memory. A researcher recruits 60 college students, randomly assigns 30 to a full 8-hour sleep condition and 30 to a 4-hour sleep condition, then tests their recall of a 30-word list the next morning. Results: The 8-hour group recalls a mean of 22 words; the 4-hour group recalls a mean of 15 words.
Sample AAQ prompts and how to answer them:
Q1: Identify the research method used. Answer: This is an experiment (specifically a between-subjects experiment). The signal is random assignment and manipulation of an independent variable.
Q2: State the operational definition of memory used in this study. Answer: Memory was operationally defined as the number of words correctly recalled from a 30-word list the following morning.
Q3: Describe what the difference in mean recall indicates. Answer: The 8-hour group recalled 7 more words on average (22 vs 15), which indicates better recall after a full night's sleep than after 4 hours of sleep.
Q4: Identify one ethical guideline the researchers should have applied. Answer: Informed consent: participants should be told they may be asked to restrict their sleep, and they must agree before taking part.
Q5: Explain how the results support or challenge the researcher's hypothesis. Answer: If the hypothesis was that more sleep improves memory, the results support it: The 8-hour group recalled 7 more words on average than the 4-hour group.
Q6: Explain how the results are consistent with the consolidation theory of memory. Answer: Consolidation theory holds that sleep, particularly REM and slow-wave sleep, strengthens memory traces. The higher recall in the full-sleep group is consistent with this theory, since more sleep would provide more consolidation time.
Each answer is 1-3 sentences. Length isn't rewarded; precision is.
For the AAQ, answer each numbered part in its own labeled paragraph (A, B, C, D, E, F). The directions ask for six labeled parts written in complete sentences, and clear labels make it easy for readers to find and credit each answer.

The AAQ is a research methods stress test. The most common mistakes come from students who know the psychology topic but not the methodology.
First, confusing correlational and experimental studies. If there's no random assignment and no manipulation, it's not an experiment. Students who call every study an experiment lose the identification point.
Second, weak operational definitions. Saying memory was defined as remembering words isn't operational; specifying the number of correctly recalled words from a 30-word list the morning after the sleep condition is.
Third, generic threats to validity. Saying "the sample was small" without explaining why it's a threat to generalizability doesn't earn the point. You have to name the threat (e.g., low external validity due to using only college students) and explain the effect (results may not generalize to older adults or children).
Fourth, restating the results without connecting them to the idea in the prompt. Part F (support or refute) requires you to use a specific finding and explain the connection, not just summarize.
How to prep for the AAQ
The most efficient prep is doing 4-6 released or practice AAQs. College Board published sample AAQs alongside the redesigned CED, and the 2025 and 2026 exam AAQs are now released on AP Central with scoring guidelines.
Alongside AAQ practice, spend real time on research methods (Science Practice 2, Research Methods and Design, in the CED, which is built into all five units). Know the difference between experimental, correlational, case study, naturalistic observation, and survey designs. Know operational definitions, independent and dependent variables, random assignment vs random sampling, and the main threats to validity (confounds, demand characteristics, experimenter bias, low external validity).
Students who front-load research methods in the first month of the year tend to find AAQs straightforward regardless of the topic. Treating methods as a side topic makes the AAQ much harder.
How the AAQ differs from the old FRQ
If you've seen prep materials from before the 2024-25 redesign, the differences matter. The old AP Psychology FRQ section had two 7-point questions in 50 minutes: a Concept Application question (apply several concepts to a scenario) and a Research Design question (analyze a described study and its data).
The new AAQ builds on the old Research Design question, but it is based on a real peer-reviewed study and adds structured tasks on statistics, ethics and generalizability.
One implication: Older prep books that haven't updated for the redesigned exam may over-invest in broad content-application practice and under-invest in research methods. If you're using a review book, check that it explicitly covers the AAQ and EBQ format. Books published in 2024 or later should; older editions may not.
