AP Psychology is one of the more content-heavy AP exams: five units cover a wide range of concepts, theories, researchers, and studies. Because the exam asks you to apply concepts and analyze research, not just recall terms, practice tests function as both content review and format practice at once. Working through MCQs with immediate answer explanations often teaches you the content faster than re-reading a textbook does.

College Board released FRQs

AP Central publishes released FRQs, scoring guidelines, and sample student responses. Only the 2025 and 2026 exams use the current format (an Article Analysis Question and an Evidence-Based Question, 70 minutes, 33.3 percent of the exam); older FRQs are useful for content review only. The scoring is granular: each part is tied to a specific task.

Use released FRQs as the primary source for essay practice. Aim for at least six across the year, self-scored against the official rubric. Pay particular attention to how the scoring guides require you to apply the term to the scenario rather than just define it.

Limitation: released full MCQ sections are limited. Supplement with a prep book or AP Classroom.

Cost: free.

Prep books

Princeton Review, Barron's, and 5 Steps to a 5 each include several full-length practice exams (the 2027 Princeton Review Premium Prep has 5, and Barron's AP Psychology Premium 2027 has 4, counting online tests); make sure you buy an edition written for the revised exam. MCQs are two-thirds of the AP Psych score (75 questions in 90 minutes), and prep books are one of the easiest sources of MCQ volume.

Use them for both timed mocks and MCQ drill in the last four to six weeks. Doing two full mocks under strict timing builds the pacing you need for the 75-question, 90-minute section.

Limitation: Barron's is more detailed than some students need; if its questions feel harder than your class tests, Princeton Review may suit you better.

Cost: About 20to30.

AP Classroom

College Board's AP Classroom, which your teacher gives you access to, has AP Daily videos plus Topic Questions and Progress Checks for each of the five units, written to the current CED. Use it as a primary MCQ source through the year, especially for weak-topic drilling.

Limitation: access depends on your teacher assigning or unlocking content, and there's no full-length timed exam.

Cost: free.

Fiveable AP Psych

Fiveable's AP Psych content includes unit study guides, live prep sessions closer to the exam, and community-generated practice questions. The live FRQ sessions can be useful for seeing real-time scoring on unseen prompts.

Use it as a community layer alongside official materials.

Limitation: content quality varies. Cross-reference against the official rubric before trusting a scoring judgment.

Cost: free tier available, paid subscription for full access.

Cognito AP Psychology

Cognito's AP Psychology course covers all units with structured content, FRQ practice built around the AAQ and EBQ rubrics the College Board uses, and worked examples of full-mark responses. The advantage over free MCQ drills is the depth on FRQ format specifically, which is often where score gains are largest.

Use it as the primary structured resource across the year, paired with AP Classroom or a prep book for MCQ volume and released FRQs for authentic essay practice.

Limitation: Cognito doesn't publish timed full-length mock exams. Add a prep book in the last month for that specific format.

Cost: All of Cognito's revision notes are free, with a weekly limit on flashcards, quizzes, and exam questions.

How to sequence your practice

October to February: work through structured content covering all units, with AP Classroom MCQ practice as you finish each unit. From January, add one released FRQ every two weeks, self-scored against the official rubric. March: pick up MCQ pace with prep-book practice tests. April: two full timed mock exams. In the final week, review your own scored FRQs rather than adding new practice.
