Since May 2025, 28 AP exams have been digital in some form via Bluebook (16 fully digital, 12 hybrid), and that continued in 2026. English Language and English Literature moved from 5 to 4 answer choices in 2025. The next big shift comes in May 2027, when the world-language exams and Statistics go fully digital and Music Theory goes hybrid. College Board has also confirmed two new AP courses launching in the 2026-27 school year with first exams in May 2027.
If you're heading into AP classes this year or next, this is what changed and what stayed the same. All of it comes from AP Central's own updates page, which is the source of truth if you ever want to double-check a subject.
Short version: 28 AP exams now run in Bluebook (fully digital or hybrid). Two new APs launch in 2026-27. Ordering deadlines for 2026-27: preferred is October 2, final is November 13.
Fully digital exams in Bluebook
Fully digital in this context means the whole exam runs in Bluebook, College Board's digital testing app. Sixteen exams sit in this category as of 2026:
- AP African American Studies
- AP Art History
- AP Comparative Government and Politics
- AP Computer Science A
- AP Computer Science Principles
- AP English Language and Composition
- AP English Literature and Composition
- AP Environmental Science
- AP European History
- AP Human Geography
- AP Latin
- AP Psychology
- AP Seminar
- AP US Government and Politics
- AP US History
- AP World History: Modern
The full list is on AP Central's coordinator updates page. From May 2027, the world-language exams and AP Statistics also move to fully digital.
AP Music Theory stayed on paper in 2026. From May 2027 it becomes hybrid: audio prompts and multiple-choice in Bluebook, free-response handwritten in a paper booklet.
Hybrid exams: Digital MCQ, paper FRQ
The hybrid format is the bigger group. Twelve subjects run their multiple-choice section in Bluebook and their free-response on paper. That includes several of the biggest-volume exams:
- AP Biology
- AP Calculus AB
- AP Calculus BC
- AP Chemistry
- AP Macroeconomics
- AP Microeconomics
- AP Physics 1
- AP Physics 2
- AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
- AP Physics C: Mechanics
- AP Precalculus
- AP Statistics (becomes fully digital from 2027)
The practical thing to know: your MCQ answers submit through Bluebook, then you switch to paper for FRQs. Your proctor manages the handoff. If you're studying for one of these, the way you rehearse timing shouldn't really change: 60 to 90 minutes on MCQ with the digital tools you'll have on the day, then the same length on FRQ under paper conditions.
We've written more on the actual scoring side in our guide on how AP exams are scored.
What stayed on paper
In 2026, six exams stayed on paper: AP French, German, Italian, Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish Literature and Culture, and Music Theory. All of them go digital or hybrid from 2027. AP 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, Drawing and Research are assessed by portfolio through the AP Digital Portfolio. AP Chinese and AP Japanese were computer-based in 2026 but sat outside the 28 Bluebook exams; they move to fully digital Bluebook testing from 2027 along with the other world languages. Check AP Central's official list for the current status of a specific subject.

Get started for free!Bluebook basics: Desmos, scratch paper, and what you see on the day
A few practical Bluebook things to know before test day.
- The built-in Desmos calculator is available on calculator-permitted digital exams. It's the same Desmos students already use for the SAT.
- Two standardized sheets of scratch paper are provided at the test center for digital exams. If you're used to sprawling working, plan accordingly.
- Reference materials (formula sheets, periodic table, etc.) are embedded inside Bluebook where they'd normally be printed at the back of a paper booklet.
- Approved handheld calculators remain permitted on paper exams. Desmos doesn't replace them, it supplements the digital versions.
College Board runs practice tests in Bluebook so you can get familiar with the interface before test day. This is genuinely worth doing at least once. The gap between "I know the content" and "I can navigate a digital exam smoothly" isn't huge, but it's easily closed with an hour of practice.
Course framework updates for 2025-26
Here are the framework changes that matter for current students.
AP Biology. The framework was reorganised for 2025-26 (resequenced topics, clarified essential knowledge, updated science practices, and biogeochemical cycles added to topic 8.2). The exam format and unit weightings are unchanged. If you're revising from an older prep book, cross-check against the current CED (course and exam description) on AP Central. Our guide on how to study for AP Biology walks through the current structure, and AP Biology unit breakdown covers the 8-unit map you'll be tested on. Cognito's AP Biology course notes map to the current CED.
AP Psychology. The redesign that launched in May 2025 continued through 2026. Digital format, 5-pillar framework, 4 answer choices instead of 5. This is one of the biggest exams by volume, so if you're taking it, check the current CED rather than an older resource. Cognito's AP Psychology course is built to the redesign.
AP English Language and AP English Literature. Both moved from 5 to 4 answer choices starting with the May 2025 exams; that format continues. Everything else (essay structure, source-based analysis, timings) stays as it was.
We wouldn't say any of these subjects "got harder" or "got easier". There isn't comparable data yet across the redesigns, and headline pass rates aren't the same thing as difficulty.
Two new AP courses for 2026-27
College Board has confirmed two new AP courses launching in the 2026-27 school year, with first exams in May 2027:
- AP Business with Personal Finance. A new business-focused AP that also folds in personal finance content, which has been a growing area of state-level graduation requirements.
- AP Cybersecurity. Part of College Board's new AP Career Kickstart programme. A third course, AP Networking, is piloting in 2026-27 ahead of a national launch in autumn 2027.
Both of these will be new to most schools' course catalogs in 2026-27. If either interests you and your school hasn't listed it yet, ask your AP coordinator whether it's coming. Rollout depends on College Board approval for the school and teacher training.
Key dates and deadlines for 2026-27
For the 2026-27 school year:
- Preferred ordering deadline: October 2, 2026. College Board's recommended date for schools to submit exam orders.
- Final ordering deadline: November 13, 2026. Late orders after this incur additional fees.
- 2027 AP Exam window: May 3-7 and May 10-14, 2027.
Exact test dates by subject are on AP Central. Our AP exam schedule for 2027 covers the full calendar.
One last practical thing: AP African American Studies became available nationwide in 2024-25 after a pilot that began in 2022-23. If your school offers it, treat it as a fully live AP with a real score distribution now. If it's not offered, that's a school-level decision.
If you're mapping this all against costs, how much AP exams cost in 2026-27 covers the current fees.
