AP Environmental Science (often called APES) is a college-level introduction to how the natural world works and how human activity is reshaping it. You study ecosystems, populations, pollution, energy and climate change through a mix of lab work, fieldwork and data analysis. The exam is 2 hours and 40 minutes long, and in 2025 about 69% of students scored a 3 or higher on the 1 to 5 AP scale.

This guide walks through what the course covers, how the exam is built, how APES is scored, who tends to do well and where it fits in a college application. What APES covers

AP Environmental Science is a science course, not an advocacy course. You learn how ecosystems function, how populations grow and crash, how the Earth's atmosphere and water systems behave, and what happens when we add pollution, land-use change and fossil fuels into the mix. About a quarter of the class time is lab and fieldwork: You measure water quality, run mark-recapture population estimates, calculate energy efficiency, model climate scenarios and analyze real datasets.

The course is organized into nine units. Each unit has a percentage weighting on the AP exam, published by the College Board in the Course and Exam Description (CED). Those weightings tell you where the marks are, which is useful when you're deciding what to spend the most time on.

Unit 9 on global change (climate, ozone depletion, ocean acidification, invasive species) is the single largest chunk, so it's worth front-loading. Units 3 through 6 (populations, Earth systems, land and water use, energy) together make up roughly half the exam, and they're where a lot of the calculations show up.


How the AP Environmental Science exam is built

The exam runs 2 hours 40 minutes and has two sections. Section I is multiple choice: 80 questions in 90 minutes, worth 60% of your score. Section II is free response: 3 questions in 70 minutes, worth 40%.

The three free-response questions (FRQs) each have a defined shape. One is a design an investigation prompt where you propose an experiment, identify variables and predict results. One is a quantitative data analysis question with graphs, tables or calculations. One is an environmental problem and solution question where you analyze a scenario, propose a solution and evaluate trade-offs.

For the May 2027 exam onward, the College Board's calculator policy no longer permits handheld graphing calculators for APES. You can use a four-function calculator (with square root), a scientific non-graphing calculator, or the Desmos calculator built into Bluebook. APES is a math-heavy science exam by AP standards, so pick the option you've practiced with and stick with it.

How APES scores stack up

In May 2025, about 245,000 students took AP Environmental Science. The score distribution, published by the College Board, was:

That puts APES roughly in line with the average AP science pass rate, but the 5 rate (12.6%) is on the lower side compared to AP Chemistry (17.9%) or AP Biology (18.9%). Distributions vary year to year, but the shape has been fairly steady: A big cluster around scores of 3 and 4, a smaller top band and a non-trivial number of 1s.

One reason the 5 rate is lower than you might expect: The exam rewards breadth over depth. You need working recall across nine very different units, from ecology to atmospheric chemistry to environmental economics, and it's easy to under-prepare on the units you personally find least interesting. Prerequisites and who tends to do well

The College Board doesn't publish hard prerequisites, but the CED recommends one year of high school biology and one year of high school chemistry before taking APES, plus at least one year of algebra. That's because a lot of unit 4 (Earth systems), unit 6 (energy) and unit 7 (atmospheric pollution) leans on chemistry vocabulary and stoichiometric-style calculations.

Students who do well in APES tend to share a few things: They're comfortable reading graphs and interpreting data, they can handle unit conversions without panicking, and they can write a short paragraph that explains cause and effect clearly. APES is a great fit if you enjoyed biology but want more real-world application, or if you're leaning toward a major in environmental science, sustainability, public policy, geology, marine biology or public health.

APES is also popular as a first AP science because the reading load is manageable and the topics feel current. If you're a sophomore or junior figuring out whether you like AP-level science before committing to AP Bio or AP Chem, it's a reasonable on-ramp. You don't need all of these to succeed, but the more that resonate, the smoother the course will feel.

How to study for AP Environmental Science at a high level

APES revision has three legs. First, you need working recall of the vocabulary and processes: What's an r-strategist vs a K-strategist, what causes ocean acidification, how does a scrubber work in a coal plant. Flashcards and active recall (writing down what you remember from a topic without notes, then checking) do most of that job.

Second, you need to practice the calculations. Percentage change, doubling time using the rule of 70, energy conversions (kWh to joules), pollutant concentrations in ppm, and dimensional analysis all show up in both sections. Doing 10 calculation problems back to back is more useful than reading a chapter on them.

Third, you need to write practice FRQs against a rubric. FRQ scoring is very structured, and the mark scheme rewards specific language: naming a pollutant, identifying a variable, giving a numeric answer with units. Two or three FRQs a week from released exams, marked honestly against the College Board's scoring guidelines, will move your score more than any amount of textbook re-reading.

One under-used tactic: Read your local news for environmental stories. APES loves case studies like the Aral Sea, Deepwater Horizon, Chernobyl, the Great Pacific garbage patch, cap-and-trade markets and the Paris Agreement. If a real example is in your head, you can drop it into an FRQ and it usually earns a point.

How APES fits in college admissions

APES sits in an interesting spot on a transcript. Admissions officers know it's a real science AP (it has a lab component, it counts toward AP Capstone-style rigor), but it's also seen as slightly less demanding than AP Bio, AP Chem or AP Physics 1. That's not a criticism of APES, it's a reflection of how the course is designed: Wider breadth, shallower depth than the single-discipline sciences.

For students planning to major in environmental science, sustainability, public policy, ecology or geoscience, APES is a signal that you've engaged with the field early, and a strong score is a plus. For students headed into pre-med, engineering or hard sciences, admissions readers will typically want to see AP Bio or AP Chem on the transcript alongside it, not APES in place of them.

On credit: A lot of colleges award credit for APES with a 4 or 5, usually as an introductory environmental science elective or a general education science credit. A handful of selective universities either don't grant credit or require a 5. The College Board keeps a searchable database of AP credit policies by school, which is worth checking for any college on your list.
