key tips for success

  • Master the 4 core perspectives

Functionalism, Marxism, feminism, interactionism. Every essay rewards perspective application. Learn each perspective's key claims on family, education, crime, stratification.

  • Learn named studies with details

AQA rewards named studies with authors, dates, findings. Prepare 15-20 key studies across the topics: Parsons (family), Willis (education), Merton (crime), Marx (class).

  • Practise 12-mark essays

Both papers have 12-mark essays. Reward: intro (define terms), 2-3 developed points with evidence and perspective application, considered evaluation. Practise until automatic.

  • Master research methods integrated

Research methods aren't a separate section. Practise applying method knowledge to source questions and evaluations. Learn strengths/limitations of each method.

  • Learn contemporary data

AQA rewards up-to-date evidence. Follow UK stats: family types (ONS), educational attainment gaps (DfE), crime rates (Home Office), income inequality (IFS).

  • Structure evaluation clearly

AO3 (20%) rewards balanced evaluation. Every 12-mark essay needs: perspective 1 view, perspective 2 counter-view, evaluation of methods/evidence, considered judgement.
