specification overview

Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is a two-tier linear qualification (Foundation and Higher) with two 2h calculator papers per candidate, each 100 marks and worth 50%. There is no non-calculator paper, calculators are permitted throughout both papers, which distinguishes this qualification from Edexcel's UK GCSE.

key tips for success

  • Use your calculator efficiently

Both papers permit a calculator. Learn: fraction key, powers/roots, scientific notation, memory functions, statistical functions. Speed matters over 4 hours of exams.

  • Learn key formulas

Edexcel provides some formulas but many must be memorised. Know: quadratic formula, sine/cosine rules (Higher), circle formulas, volume formulas.

  • Practise multi-step problems

International Edexcel papers use structured multi-step questions. Practise following sub-parts through in order and using earlier answers.

  • Master Higher-only content

Higher tier rewards content Foundation doesn't cover: algebraic fractions, circle theorems, sine/cosine rules, vector proofs. Drill these thoroughly.

  • Practise past papers under time

International Edexcel past papers are widely available. Do timed practice for both papers, stamina matters over 4 hours of exams.

  • Show working clearly

Method marks are awarded for showing working even if the final answer is wrong. Always write down the steps.
