Oxford AQA International GCSE Geography uses global (non-UK-only) case studies. Fieldwork IS compulsory: all students must complete an individual fieldwork enquiry, which is assessed by exam in Paper 3 Section C. Paper 3 Section B also tests fieldwork skills in unfamiliar contexts. Alternative data-collection methods are acceptable where real fieldwork is not practical, but there must be a genuine planning and data-selection element.

key tips for success

  • Prepare your individual fieldwork enquiry title

Paper 3 Section C requires students to name the title of their own fieldwork enquiry and answer questions about their planning, methods, analysis and evaluation. Have your title, aims, methods and conclusions committed to memory.

  • Learn global (non-UK) case studies

Oxford AQA uses international case studies. Prepare: 1 earthquake, 1 volcano, 1 tropical storm, 1 tropical rainforest, 1 major city in an LIC/NEE, 1 LIC/NEE rapid-development country, plus London and New York as world cities.

  • Prioritise AO3 (35%) - interpret, analyse, evaluate

AO3 is the largest objective at 35%. Practise applying knowledge to interpret data/maps/photos and make evidence-based judgements, especially on Paper 3 where AO3 alone is 34 of 60 marks.

  • Master the skills toolkit

Paper 3 (28%) is skills-only, and skills are tested on all three papers. Practise cartographic skills (1:50,000 and 1:25,000 large-scale maps, four/six-figure grid references), choropleth/isoline/dot maps, and statistical measures (median, mean, IQR, best-fit lines).

  • Time-box carefully

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 1h 30m for 80 marks (~1.1 min per mark). Paper 3 is 1h 15m for 60 marks (~1.25 min per mark). Practise pace on past papers.

  • Read global geographical news

International-focused questions reward current examples. Follow BBC World, National Geographic and The Economist for stories on hazards, urbanisation and development.
