key tips for success

  • Complete fieldwork carefully, Paper 3 depends on it

Paper 3 Sections A and B test the two fieldwork enquiries you conducted (Section A physical, Section B human). Take detailed notes during fieldwork days: methods, data, sampling, sketches, photos, evaluation. You'll need them for exam questions.

  • Learn 8-10 case studies in depth

Every extended-response question rewards a named case study with dates, figures, causes and consequences. Prepare: 1 river, 1 coast, 1 weather hazard, 1 city (UK + LIC), 1 rainforest, 1 development, 1 resource issue.

  • Master the 12-mark essay structure

12-mark essays reward: intro (define terms), 2-3 developed points with evidence, considered judgement. Practise the structure until automatic.

  • Watch SPaG marks

SPaG is assessed in all three papers (4 SPaG marks per paper). Simple: correct spellings of geographical terminology, varied sentences, correct punctuation.

  • Master OS map skills

OS map skills come up in Papers 1 and 2: grid references, contours, distance, area. Drill these until fast.

  • Practise past papers under time

Edexcel A past papers are widely available. Time yourself, practise all 3 papers. Paper 3's synoptic essay in Section B needs practice with linking multi-paper content.
