key tips for success

  • Practise listening every day

Paper 1 is 25% of the qualification. Do 15 minutes daily: news clips, podcasts (RFI, France Info), YouTube channels for learners.

  • Master 4-5 tenses

Present, perfect, imperfect, near future, conditional are essential. Higher-scoring answers use pluperfect and subjunctive. Learn -er, -ir, -re regular endings plus être, avoir, aller, faire, venir.

  • Learn 250-300 core words per topic

Appendix 1 of the 4FR1 specification is a minimum core vocabulary list organised by topic area; tasks targeted at grades 1-5 are based on it, though papers may include some unfamiliar vocabulary. Work through it systematically, then add extra range for Section B writing.

  • Practise Paper 2 writing under time

    Paper 2 combines reading + 2 writing pieces in 1h 45m for 80 marks. Time-budget carefully: ~50 mins reading, ~40 mins writing + check.

  • Prepare Paper 3 speaking thoroughly

Paper 3 is teacher-conducted 8-10 minutes and externally assessed by Pearson. Practise picture-based discussion and general conversation across all 5 topic areas.

  • Learn opinion phrases + connectives

Writing rewards opinions with justification and complex sentences. Learn: à mon avis, cependant, néanmoins, parce que, puisque, tandis que.
