key tips for success

  • Learn the set text list early

Check the current set text list with your teacher, it's updated periodically. Cambridge Songs of Ourselves anthology is a common poetry choice.

  • Practise choosing between questions

Each paper offers a choice of 2 questions per text. Practise reading both, picking the one you can develop most deeply, and committing quickly.

  • Master personal response (AO4)

AO4 (25%) explicitly rewards sensitive and informed personal response. Practise phrases like 'I find...', 'This suggests to me...', 'What strikes me...' without becoming self-indulgent.

  • Learn quotes cold for Papers 1 and 2

Papers 1 (Poetry and Prose) and 2 (Drama) are closed-book. Learn 20-30 short quotes per text (character, theme, key moments). Paper 3 Drama is open-text, so you may take a clean copy in.

  • Choose your route early

Three routes: Paper 1 + Paper 2 (traditional drama); Paper 1 + Paper 3 Drama Open-Text + Paper 4 Unseen; Paper 1 + Paper 3 Drama Open-Text + Component 5 Coursework. Your school picks. Coursework rewards steady work; unseen rewards close-reading skill.

  • Learn context lightly

AO2 mentions contexts but Cambridge is less context-heavy than UK GCSEs. Learn 2-3 key context points per text, don't over-invest.
