key tips for success

  • Master the Paper 1 summary question

Paper 1 summary (Question 1(f)) is worth 15 marks (10 reading + 5 writing). It is based on Text B only and must be no more than 120 words of continuous writing in your own words. Practise weekly.

  • Nail the Paper 2 directed writing form

Paper 2 Section A dictates a form (letter, article, speech, journal). Learn conventions for each: greeting, headline, direct address, register.

  • Choose composition titles carefully

Paper 2 Section B offers 4 titles: 2 descriptive, 2 narrative. Read all four (spend 5 minutes) and pick what you can develop fully in ~45 minutes.

  • Practise language analysis with quotation

Paper 1 rewards specific analysis with quoted evidence. Practise: point + short quotation + technique + effect on reader in every analytical answer.

  • Watch for AO4 marks throughout

Spelling, punctuation, grammar and range (W3 and W5) sit inside AO2 Writing, which is 50% of the qualification. Every response needs varied vocabulary, correct punctuation and controlled sentence variety.

  • Time-box both papers

Both papers are 2 hours. Practise pace: Paper 1 (~30 mins per question), Paper 2 (~55 mins per section).
