key tips for success

  • Master demand and supply diagrams

Every Paper 1 exam has demand/supply diagrams. Practise sketching, shifting curves and calculating new equilibria. Label everything (P, Q, S, D, arrows for shifts).

  • Learn key formulas

Price elasticity of demand (PED), income elasticity (YED), cross elasticity (XED). Memorise formulas and interpret coefficients (elastic vs inelastic).

  • Read current economic news

Both papers reward real-world context. Follow BBC/FT economic stories: interest rate decisions, inflation, unemployment, exchange rates.

  • Structure evaluation clearly

AO3 (30%) rewards balanced evaluation. Every extended answer needs: point, evidence, analysis and a considered judgement with a 'however' or 'depends on'.

  • Learn 4 key macro objectives

Paper 2 revolves around economic growth, low unemployment, price stability, balance of payments. Memorise definitions, current UK figures and typical policy responses.

  • Practise past papers

AQA past papers are widely available. Time yourself against the exam clock, and practise structuring 9- and 15-mark responses in bullet-pointed plans before writing.
