assessment structure
| Paper | What's assessed | Length | Marks | Weight | Question types |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Principles of Computer Science) | Computational thinking, data, computers, networks, issues and impact | 1h 30m | 75 | 50% | Short-answer and extended-response questions on theory |
| Paper 2 (Application of Computational Thinking) | Problem solving with programming (Python 3) | 2h | 75 | 50% | Onscreen exam with Python code editor. Multiple tasks writing, reading and debugging Python code |
Paper 2 is Edexcel's distinctive onscreen exam where students write actual Python code in an editor and submit runnable solutions. Practise using an IDE similar to the exam environment before sitting.
assessment objectives
| AO | What it means | Overall |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and principles of computer science. | 30% |
| AO2 | Apply knowledge and understanding of key concepts and principles of computer science. | 40% |
| AO3 | Analyse problems in computational terms to make reasoned judgements and to design, program, evaluate and refine solutions. | 30% |
key tips for success
Get comfortable in the onscreen editor
Paper 2 is onscreen with a real Python code editor. Familiarise yourself with the interface before the exam through Edexcel's practice materials.
Master Python 3 syntax cold
Paper 2 needs fluent Python 3: lists, loops, functions, string methods, file handling. Drill until you can write standard patterns without thinking.
Practise debugging under pressure
Paper 2 includes debugging tasks where you find and fix errors in given Python code. Practise reading unfamiliar code and diagnosing problems.
Learn binary and hex fast
Paper 1 tests binary/hex/denary conversion and binary arithmetic. Drill until fast and accurate.
Draw network diagrams
Paper 1 topology questions expect clean star/bus/mesh sketches with labels. Practise drawing under time.
Structure ethical answers
Paper 1 extended-response impact questions reward balanced arguments citing UK legislation (Data Protection Act 2018, Computer Misuse Act 1990).
