specification overview

Edexcel International GCSE Science Double Award (4SD0) is a linear qualification combining biology, chemistry and physics content, awarded as two grades (9-1 to 9-1). It's assessed by three externally-marked exam papers (one per science, each 2 hours) with no coursework and no tiering.

specification overview

subject content

  1. 1. Biology

    Paper 1B
    • Nature and variety of living organisms; structures and functions
    • Reproduction and inheritance; ecology and the environment
    • Use of biological resources
  2. 2. Chemistry

    Paper 1C
    • Principles of chemistry: states, atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry
    • Inorganic chemistry: group chemistry, reactivity, extraction
    • Physical chemistry: energetics, rates, equilibria. Organic chemistry
  3. 3. Physics

    Paper 1P
    • Forces and motion; electricity; waves; energy resources
    • Solids, liquids and gases; magnetism and electromagnetism
    • Radioactivity and particles; astrophysics

Double Award content is a subset of each separate International GCSE (4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1). Students who sit Double Award get 2 grades from the 3 exam papers; separate-science students sit the same Paper 1 in each science plus an additional Paper 2.

key tips for success

  • Cover all three sciences together

Double Award has one paper per science but they combine to two grades. Don't over-focus on one science.

  • Know it's a subset of separate sciences

Content overlaps with 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 but with less depth. Use separate-science resources with care, some content is trimmed.

  • Practise past papers

Edexcel International Double Award past papers date back to the 2017 spec. Do timed practice for each of the three papers.

  • Learn maths skills across sciences

Chemistry needs stoichiometry and moles; Physics needs equations and unit conversions; Biology has quantitative genetics. Practise the maths carefully.

  • No practical exam

No practical exam. Practical content is tested through written questions on methods, results and evaluations.

  • Structure extended answers

Extended-writing questions reward structure: state, explain, apply, evaluate. Practise long-answer writing across all three sciences.
