specification overview

SQA National 5 Chemistry is the Scottish equivalent of GCSE-level Chemistry, covering three areas of study: Chemical Changes and Structure; Nature's Chemistry; and Chemistry in Society. It's assessed by one 2-hour externally-marked written question paper worth 80 marks (80% of the qualification) plus an Assignment worth 20 marks (20%), graded A-D or No Award.

key tips for success

  • Start the Assignment early

The Assignment is 20% and takes real time to research and write. Start scoping the topic in S4.

  • Master the 20-mark objective section

Section 1 of the exam is worth 20 marks of objective (multiple-choice) questions. Practise pace and accuracy, this is where marks are gained or lost quickly.

  • Learn the homologous series

Nature's Chemistry rewards knowing alkanes, alkenes, cycloalkanes, alcohols and carboxylic acids with naming, formulae and reactions.

  • Build a chemical formula bank

SQA rewards writing correct chemical formulae. Practise until automatic (common ions, radicals, and equation balancing).

  • Master extended-response structure

Section 2 of the exam includes extended-response questions. Structure with clear chemical reasoning, correct terminology and worked examples.

  • Use SQA past papers

SQA National 5 Chemistry past papers are on the SQA website. Do timed practice through S4.
