specification overview

OCR Gateway A GCSE Chemistry (J248) is a separate-science qualification covering 6 teaching topics from particles through to global challenges, plus a practical skills topic (C7). It's tiered (Foundation grades 5-1 or Higher grades 9-4), linear (both papers sat at end of year 11), and graded 9-1, with practical activity groups (PAGs) examined across both papers.

key tips for success

  • Master Paper 2 dependencies

Paper 2 (or Paper 4) assumes knowledge from Paper 1/3 topics. Revise C1-C3 as part of your Paper 2/4 preparation.

  • Learn the PAGs

Practical Activity Groups are assessed through written questions on every paper (at least 15% of marks assess practical skills). Learn method, apparatus and expected results for each PAG.

  • Practise moles for Higher tier

Higher-tier moles calculations recur. Learn mass, concentration and gas volume calculations.

  • Master ionic and half-equations

Higher-tier electrolysis and displacement questions reward well-written half-equations. Practise balancing.

  • Build a reagent bank

Tests for cations, anions and gases recur every year. Learn each test, reagent and observation.

  • Use past papers strategically

OCR Gateway Chemistry has years of past papers. Do timed practice through year 11.
