specification overview

Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry (4CH1) is a linear single-tier qualification covering 4 topic areas: principles of chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and organic chemistry. Two papers are sat at the end of the course; graded on the 9-1 scale. No separate Foundation/Higher tier, all students take the same papers.

key tips for success

  • Master moles and calculations

IGCSE Chemistry rewards precise moles calculations. Practise moles = mass/Mr, concentration, gas volume, percentage yield until automatic.

  • Learn ionic tests

Tests for cations (flame tests, precipitation), anions (BaCl2, AgNO3) and gases (litmus, splint, limewater). Learn each test, reagent and observation.

  • Master the Haber process

Ammonia and the Haber process (within the inorganic chemistry topic) recurs on both papers. Learn the Haber process conditions (temperature, pressure, catalyst) with reasoning.

  • Practise past papers

Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry has years of past papers. Do timed practice from year 10.

  • Build a definition bank

Precise definitions matter (mole, empirical formula, dynamic equilibrium). Learn word-for-word from the syllabus.

  • No tier decision

Single-tier means all students take the same papers with grades 9-1 available. Focus on maximising your score.
