specification overview

SQA National 5 Biology is the Scottish equivalent of GCSE-level Biology, covering three areas: Cell Biology; Multicellular Organisms; Life on Earth. Students are assessed by one 2-hour written question paper worth 80 marks (80% of the qualification) plus an Assignment worth 20 marks (20%), a piece of individual research assessed under exam-style conditions.

key tips for success

  • Start the Assignment early

The Assignment is 20% of the qualification and takes real time to research and write. Start scoping the topic early in S4.

  • Master the 20-mark objective section

Section 1 of the exam is worth 20 marks of objective (multiple-choice) questions. Practise pace and accuracy, this is where marks are gained or lost quickly.

  • Learn cellular processes cold

Cell biology (Area 1) underpins the other areas. Photosynthesis, respiration, DNA replication, protein synthesis, learn these until automatic.

  • Build a case-study bank for Life on Earth

Area 3 rewards named examples of ecosystems, food supply challenges and evolutionary examples. Build a bank of Scottish and global examples.

  • Master extended-response structure

Section 2 of the exam includes extended-response questions. Structure with clear biological reasoning, correct terminology and worked examples.

  • Use SQA past papers

SQA National 5 Biology past papers are available on the SQA website. Do timed practice through S4 to build stamina.
