specification overview

OCR Twenty First Century GCSE Biology B (J257) is a separate-science qualification developed with the University of York, teaching biology through real-world contexts and stories. Tiered (Foundation grades 5-1 or Higher grades 9-4), linear, and graded 9-1. Two papers per candidate: 'Breadth in biology' and 'Depth in biology'; both papers assess content from all eight teaching chapters.

Foundation candidates sit J257/01 + J257/02; Higher candidates sit J257/03 + J257/04. Both papers assess content from all eight chapters at the entered tier - the split is by question style (Breadth = short-answer only; Depth = adds extended-response 6-markers), not by topic. Both papers include the Ideas about Science strand and practical skills questions.

key tips for success

  • Learn the context-based approach

OCR B frames biology through real-world contexts (e.g. genetic testing, disease outbreaks, climate change). Practise applying biology to novel contexts.

  • Master 'Ideas about Science'

Both papers include the Ideas about Science strand (evidence, correlation vs causation, risk, developing scientific explanations). Learn each idea and how to apply.

  • Practise past papers

OCR B has fewer past papers than A or AQA, so use every one available. Compare with OCR B specimen materials for extra practice.

  • Learn the PAGs

Practical Activity Groups are assessed through written questions on both papers. Learn method, apparatus and expected results for each.

  • Choose the right tier

Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher starts at grade 4. If you're consistently scoring 60%+ on Higher past papers, stick with Higher.

  • Build a case-study bank

OCR B rewards real-world examples. Follow biology news (BBC Science, New Scientist) and build a bank of relevant case studies (recent disease outbreaks, genetic engineering developments, conservation projects).
