specification overview

OCR Gateway A GCSE Biology (J247) is a separate-science qualification covering 6 teaching topics from cell-level systems through to global challenges, plus a practical skills topic (B7). It's tiered (Foundation grades 5-1 or Higher grades 9-4), linear (both papers sat at end of year 11), and graded 9-1, with practical activity groups (PAGs) examined across both papers.

key tips for success

  • Master Paper 2 dependencies

Paper 2 (or Paper 4) assumes knowledge from Paper 1/3 topics. Revise B1-B3 as part of your Paper 2/4 preparation.

  • Learn the PAGs

Practical Activity Groups are assessed through written questions on every paper (at least 15% of marks assess practical skills). Learn method, apparatus and expected results for each PAG.

  • Build a definition bank

OCR rewards precise biological definitions (osmosis, active transport, homeostasis, natural selection). Learn word-for-word.

  • Practise labelling diagrams

Cell structure, digestive system, heart, nephron, plant tissues. Learn labelling under time pressure.

  • Master maths in Biology

At least 10% of marks target maths (percentages, ratios, standard form, magnification calculations). Practise until automatic.

  • Use past papers strategically

OCR Gateway Biology has years of past papers. Do timed practice through year 11 to build stamina.
