specification overview

Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1) is a linear single-tier qualification covering 5 topic areas from the nature and variety of living organisms through to use of biological resources. Two papers are sat at the end of the course; graded on the 9-1 scale. There's no separate tier, all students take the same papers.

key tips for success

  • Learn all five kingdoms + viruses

Topic 1 rewards precise knowledge of characteristics distinguishing kingdoms (bacteria, protoctista, fungi, plants, animals) and the viral 'not really alive' position.

  • Master the five life processes

Nutrition, respiration, transport, excretion, coordination in plants and animals. Learn the parallels and differences.

  • Practise labelled diagrams

Cells, digestive system, heart, nephron, plant tissues, practise labelling under time pressure.

  • Build a definition bank

Edexcel IGCSE rewards precise biological definitions (osmosis, diffusion, active transport, homeostasis). Learn word-for-word from the syllabus.

  • No tier split

Single-tier means everyone takes the same papers and can access grades 9-1. No decision to make about tier.

  • Practise past papers

Edexcel IGCSE Biology has years of past papers. Do timed practice from year 10 to build stamina.
