key tips for success

  • Master the 8 core practicals

Practical-context questions appear on both papers. Learn method, apparatus and expected results for each of the 8 core practicals.

  • Learn topic 1 well

Topic 1 (key concepts) appears on both papers, extra investment here pays off across the qualification.

  • Build maths fluency

10% of marks target maths, magnification, standard form, ratios, percentages. Practise these until automatic.

  • Practise extended writing

Both papers include 6-mark extended writing questions. Structure with clear scientific reasoning, correct terminology and applied examples.

  • Choose the right tier

Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher starts at grade 4. If you're consistently scoring around 60%+ on Higher past papers, stick with Higher. If you're scoring below 50%, discuss with your teacher.

  • Use past papers strategically

Edexcel GCSE Biology has years of past papers. Do timed practice through year 11 to build stamina and identify weak topics.
