key tips for success

  • Master the classic + contemporary studies structure

Edexcel pairs classic studies (Milgram, Loftus) with contemporary applications. Learn both together, the exam rewards discussing how classic findings apply to modern contexts.

  • Choose Paper 2 option carefully

Criminological is popular. Child and health are less common. Your school picks from these three options, and the choice shapes Paper 2 Section B substantially.

  • Practise research methods for Paper 3

Paper 3 is heavily research-methods focused. Practise designing studies, calculating stats (mean, median, mode, standard deviation, chi-squared) and evaluating validity/reliability.

  • Master the Issues and Debates framework

Paper 3 also tests Issues and Debates: nature-nurture, freedom-determinism, reductionism-holism, individual-situational, gender/culture bias, ethics. Learn each and apply to Paper 1 and 2 content.

  • Learn schizophrenia and one other disorder cold

Paper 2 Section A on Clinical Psychology tests schizophrenia + one chosen disorder (unipolar depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or anorexia nervosa). Know classification (ICD/DSM), symptoms, aetiology, treatments and evaluation.

  • AO3 rewards balanced evaluation

Every extended answer needs strengths, weaknesses, contradictory evidence and methodological critique. Practise the structured evaluation format.
