specification overview

Edexcel A-Level Mathematics (9MA0) is a two-year linear qualification with three 2-hour papers, each worth 33.3% of the qualification. Papers 1 and 2 cover Pure Mathematics only; Paper 3 combines Statistics (Section A) with Mechanics (Section B), drawing on Pearson's large data set of UK weather stations.

key tips for success

  • Learn the large data set

Paper 3 Section A uses Edexcel's large data set (UK weather stations). Familiarise yourself with the variable names, station locations and typical patterns.

  • Practise proof techniques

Proof by deduction, contradiction, exhaustion, and disproof by counter-example. Papers 1 and 2 reward well-structured proofs.

  • Master calculus fundamentals

Differentiation and integration thread through Papers 1 and 2. Practise substitution, parts, partial fractions and implicit differentiation until automatic.

  • Learn kinematics with variable acceleration

Paper 3 Section B tests kinematics using calculus with variable acceleration. Practise SUVAT plus derivative/integral forms.

  • Master hypothesis testing

Paper 3 Section A rewards clear hypothesis-testing structure: hypotheses, test statistic, distribution, critical value, conclusion in context.

  • Use your calculator strategically

Graphical calculators are permitted on all papers. Learn statistical functions, equation solvers and numerical integration to save time.
