specification overview

Edexcel A-Level Further Mathematics (9FM0) is a two-year linear qualification extending A-Level Mathematics. Papers 1 and 2 (Core Pure) are compulsory; Papers 3 and 4 are chosen from optional papers in Further Pure, Further Mechanics, Further Statistics or Decision Mathematics. All four papers are 1h 30m, worth 25% each.

Papers 3 and 4 are chosen as one of ten valid option pairs: either (a) any two of the four Option 1 papers (FP1, FS1, FM1, D1), or (b) a matching Option 1 + Option 2 pair from the same strand (e.g. FP1+FP2, FS1+FS2, FM1+FM2, D1+D2). Common combinations: FP1+FS1, FM1+FS1, FP1+FP2. Your school picks the combination at the start of the course.

key tips for success

  • Take A-Level Maths alongside

Further Maths assumes A-Level Maths content. Ideally sit both together, the Core Pure work directly extends A-Level Maths pure content.

  • Pick options strategically

Two option papers from Further Pure/Mechanics/Statistics/Decision. Choose based on your target degree: FM/FP for physics/engineering; FS for economics/data science; Decision for computer science.

  • Master matrices and complex numbers

Core Pure leans heavily on matrices (2×2, 3×3, transformations, eigen theory) and complex numbers (De Moivre, roots of unity). Practise until automatic.

  • Practise differential equations

First and second-order linear ODEs may appear on either Core Pure paper. Learn integrating factor, complementary function + particular integral, and modelling with damped oscillations.

  • Use the formula booklet

Pearson provides a formula booklet in the exam. Know what's in it to avoid deriving standard results.

  • Practise hyperbolic identities

sinh, cosh, tanh and inverses can appear on either Core Pure paper. Learn identities, derivatives and standard integrals until automatic.
