key tips for success

  • Take A Level Maths alongside

Further Maths assumes A Level Maths content. Ideally sit both together, the further pure work directly extends the pure content from A Level Maths.

  • Master complex numbers

Complex numbers thread through Paper 2. Learn De Moivre's theorem, roots of unity and geometric interpretation until automatic.

  • Practise matrix operations

Matrices appear on Papers 1 and 2. Practise 2×2 and 3×3 operations, determinants, inverses and eigen theory under time pressure.

  • Learn hyperbolic function identities

sinh, cosh, tanh and their inverses come up on Paper 2. Learn identities and standard integrals until automatic.

  • Practise proof by induction

Paper 1 rewards well-structured induction proofs. Practise the standard scaffold: base case, inductive step, conclusion.

  • Use the formula booklet strategically

Cambridge provides a formula booklet in the exam. Know what's in it to avoid wasting time deriving standard results.
