specification overview

AQA A-Level Further Mathematics (7367) is a two-year linear qualification extending A-Level Maths. Students sit three 2-hour papers of 100 marks each (33.3% weight): two compulsory Further Pure papers, plus Paper 3, which combines two of three optional applications (Mechanics, Statistics, Discrete) in a single paper with two answer booklets. The three valid Paper 3 combinations are Discrete+Statistics, Statistics+Mechanics, or Mechanics+Discrete.

key tips for success

  • Take A-Level Maths alongside

Further Maths assumes A-Level Maths content. Ideally sit both together, revising A-Level Maths topics as they underpin Further Pure work.

  • Pick your two Paper 3 options carefully

Paper 3 combines two of three optional applications. Pick the pair that fits your target degree: Mechanics+Statistics for physics/engineering, Statistics+Discrete for economics/computer science, Mechanics+Discrete for engineering with a computing lean. The valid combinations are Discrete+Statistics, Statistics+Mechanics, or Mechanics+Discrete.

  • Master complex numbers early

Complex numbers thread through Further Pure. Learn De Moivre's theorem, roots of unity, exponential form and geometric interpretation until automatic.

  • Practise matrices and linear algebra

Matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors come up regularly. Practise 2×2 and 3×3 matrix operations under time pressure.

  • Learn to solve differential equations

First and second-order linear differential equations are core Further Pure. Practise integrating factor, complementary function + particular integral, and modelling.

  • Use formula booklet strategically

AQA provides a formula booklet in the exam. Know what's in it so you don't waste time deriving standard results.
