You do not get the pre-release, or any research or investigation data from it, in the exam. The paper itself provides a Source Booklet of previously unseen extracts, in two sections of quantitative and qualitative stimulus. Papers 1 and 2 are theme-specific but each includes cross-theme connections.

key tips for success

  • Prepare specifically for Paper 3's pre-release context

Pearson publishes the context document before the exam. Read, annotate, discuss in class and think about likely questions before you sit the paper. It's your biggest advantage.

  • Learn the four-theme structure

Themes 1 and 4 are Paper 1; themes 2 and 3 are Paper 2; all four appear on Paper 3. Knowing which theme lands in which paper helps focused revision.

  • Build a case-study bank

Papers 1 and 2 use real business contexts. Follow the business news (FT, BBC Business, Bloomberg) and build short case notes on ~10 well-known firms across sectors.

  • Practise the extended-response questions

Section B on Papers 1 and 2 is worth big marks and rewards judgement (AO4 is 26-28%). Structure your answer with a clear conclusion backed by weighted arguments.

  • Master the quantitative techniques

Ratios, percentages, index numbers, break-even, investment appraisal, market share. Practise these until automatic so the calculation marks come easily.

  • Learn the strategic frameworks

SWOT, PESTLE, Porter's Five Forces, Ansoff's Matrix, Porter's generic strategies. Know when each applies and how to apply them to unseen contexts.
