The short answer for most families in England and Wales: State schools return on Tuesday 1 September 2026, with a lot of pupils starting on the Wednesday or Thursday after an INSET (in-service training) day or two. In Scotland, the autumn term starts in mid-August, which trips parents up if they have moved or are new to the country. Northern Ireland sits in the same week as England and Wales.

There is no single national start date in the UK. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each run their own system, and within England and Wales, local councils and individual schools set the specific day. 1 September – Most common English return date. Roughly six in ten English local authorities return pupils on Tuesday 1 September 2026, but dates range from 24 August to 7 September depending on where you live.

In England, term dates are set by local authorities for the community and voluntary-controlled schools they run. Academies, free schools, foundation schools and voluntary-aided schools can legally set their own, though most stay close to their council's dates so families with children at different schools do not end up with mismatched holidays.

In Wales, term dates are approved centrally and published on gov.wales, and almost every local authority follows the same standard calendar. In Scotland, all 32 councils set their own dates independently, which is why start dates vary from about 12 August to 20 August. In Northern Ireland, the Education Authority (EA) publishes recommended holiday dates and most schools follow them, though individual boards of governors can vary.

The practical upshot: The right date depends on your part of the UK, your council and your specific school.

Across England, the majority of local authorities have set Tuesday 1 September 2026 as the pupil return date. A sizeable minority, mostly London boroughs and parts of the south east, return on Wednesday 2 September or Thursday 3 September, and a small number sit outside that window. Many schools use one or two INSET days at the very start of the week for staff training, so even where the official term starts on 1 September, your child might not attend until the Wednesday or Thursday. Your school will send a specific calendar with those days marked. Scottish schools return in mid-August, several weeks earlier than the rest of the UK. The trade-off is a longer autumn term and a shorter summer holiday, plus a mid-October break (often called the October Week) that most councils build in.

Each of the 32 Scottish councils sets its own dates. The earliest returns in 2026 are around 12 August. Edinburgh's pupils return on Wednesday 12 August 2026, with staff back two days earlier for in-service days. Glasgow's dates fall in a similar window.

Wales is the tidiest part of the UK for this. The Welsh Government publishes approved term dates for the whole country, and 21 of 22 local authorities follow the standard calendar for 2026 to 2027. That means autumn term starts on Tuesday 1 September 2026 and ends on Friday 18 December 2026. The one variation is Powys, which ends autumn term on Tuesday 22 December.

Schools in Northern Ireland tend to return in the first week of September, in a similar window to England and Wales. The Education Authority publishes recommended holiday dates each year, and most schools follow them, but there is more variation between individual schools than in Wales. Grammar schools in particular often stagger year groups over the first few days, so check with your specific school.

The table below shows state-school return dates set by the main local authority for a handful of UK cities. Academies and voluntary-aided schools may differ slightly, but these give a reliable sense of when the term starts.

London deserves its own note because there is no such thing as a London-wide start date. Each of the 32 boroughs sets its own calendar. Boroughs including Westminster, Tower Hamlets, Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Brent, and Wandsworth return on Tuesday 1 September 2026. Boroughs including Hackney, Camden, Ealing, Haringey, Lambeth, Southwark, Newham and Islington return on Wednesday 2 September 2026. A few outer boroughs, notably Kingston upon Thames and Richmond upon Thames, return on Thursday 3 September.

Independent (private) schools set their own term dates and often start their autumn term a few days to a full week later than state schools nearby. It is common to see private prep and senior schools returning on the Wednesday or Thursday of the first week of September, or even the second week. Some also use the first day or two for staggered inductions. In England and Wales, academies and free schools got the ability to set their own dates as part of a wider 2010s push to give schools more control. Most still cluster around the same week because it is easier for staff and families, though a few councils push start dates earlier or later to align INSET days with a bank holiday.

State schools in England, Wales and Scotland teach a minimum of 190 pupil days per year (with 5 extra INSET days on top, making 195 total in England); Northern Ireland's minimum is higher, typically 200 days. Term dates get shuffled around within that constraint.

Three reliable places to check, in order. First, your child's school website. Most schools publish a full calendar for the academic year, and this is the most accurate source because it includes the school's specific INSET days.

Second, your local council's website. Councils publish standard term dates for community and voluntary-controlled schools, which is a good default if your school does not publish its own.

Third, the gov.uk term dates tool (gov.uk/school-term-holiday-dates). This works for England and Wales, matches your postcode to your council, and links out to the council's page.
