Section I of the AP (Advanced Placement) Biology exam is 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. That's 90 seconds per question if you spread evenly, but you shouldn't spread evenly. The College Board's own item pool mixes 30-second recall questions with 3-minute data-interpretation sets, and students who run out of time often do so because they spent 4 minutes on a stimulus question early on and never made it back.

The four question types you'll actually see
Recent released MCQs cluster into four flavors, and knowing which one you're looking at changes how long you should spend.
Standalone recall (a minority of the 60). One or two sentences, testing whether you know a definition or process. These are 20 to 40 seconds each. Do them fast and bank the time.
Standalone application. One or two sentences, but you have to apply a concept to a new scenario. 60 to 90 seconds. The trap is over-thinking; if two answers look equally right, one is a distractor and the other tracks CED language.
Stimulus questions in sets (a large share of the paper, typically in sets of four to five sharing a data table, graph or experimental description). Each individual question is 60 to 90 seconds, but you also need 30 to 60 seconds to read the stimulus once carefully before you touch the questions. Read the stimulus fully first, then answer the questions in order.
Calculation questions (a small handful). These are standard four-option multiple-choice questions that usually need the equations and formulas sheet. Don't guess without doing the arithmetic; partial credit doesn't exist on the MCQ, so a wrong number is zero.
A common MCQ time sink is re-reading a stimulus you already read for the previous question in the set. Read the stimulus once, then answer all questions in the set in one pass before moving on.

Miss a checkpoint by more than 5 minutes and you need to accelerate: guess quickly on any question where you can't eliminate at least two options, flag it, and move on. There's no penalty for guessing on the AP, so blank answers are always worse than random guesses.
The eliminate-two decision
Every AP Bio MCQ has four options. Two of them are usually wrong for an obvious reason: they contradict a fact you know, or they invert cause and effect, or they answer a different question than the one asked. Getting to two-out-of-four in 20 seconds means you're already at 50 percent even if you guess, which is a huge accuracy uplift over cold-guessing at 25 percent.
The habit to build: on every MCQ, cross out the two options you're eliminating (Bluebook's option eliminator tool lets you do this on screen) and only then compare the remaining two. Choosing from all four options at once makes it easier to talk yourself into a plausible distractor.

For practice quality, in order: official College Board material (released FRQs on AP Central, currently 2023 to 2026, plus the MCQs and practice exams your teacher can assign through AP Classroom), Cognito's past-paper library grouped by year with worked solutions, and prep-book publishers (Barron's, Princeton Review, 5 Steps to a 5) for volume. Prep-book MCQs are looser in style than CollegeBoard's own, but they're fine for drilling content weaknesses.
For pacing practice specifically, do timed 30-question halves rather than full 60-question papers. It's easier to sit two focused 45-minute halves in a school week than one 90-minute block, and the pacing feedback is the same.
Don't mark your own MCQ practice by looking at the answer key mid-session. Sit the whole block, then mark, then work through every wrong answer to find whether it was content (didn't know), skill (misread the stem) or timing (rushed). The mistake type tells you what to fix.
How to drill this into muscle memory
The habits above don't stick from reading; they stick from timed practice. A useful weekly routine in the last two months before the exam: two 30-question timed halves (45 minutes each), one on stimulus-heavy questions and one on standalone questions. Mark each half against the answer key, then work through every wrong answer to classify the mistake.
Wrong answers fall into three buckets. Content mistakes (didn't know the material) send you back to your notes for that CED subtopic. Skill mistakes (misread the stem, missed a keyword) send you back to your reading strategy: were you skimming when you should have been marking up the question? Timing mistakes (rushed, ran out of time) send you back to the pace-per-checkpoint plan.
Done systematically for six to eight weeks, this kind of review can add several correct answers on a 60-question paper, which can be the difference between a 4 and a 5.
The last five minutes
If you've held the pace, you'll finish question 60 with roughly 5 minutes to spare. Use those minutes on flagged questions in the order you flagged them, working through each with fresh eyes instead of trying to re-verify answers you already committed to. Research on answer-changing generally finds that when students change an answer after a second look, they move from wrong to right more often than from right to wrong, so don't be afraid to change an answer you have a clear reason to change. Sweeping flagged questions is a high-yield use of the last five minutes.
