AP Biology can be demanding to prepare for because the exam tests both content depth and experimental reasoning, and most textbooks lean heavily toward the first. Practice tests are where you find out whether you can apply the content to novel scenarios, which is what the exam is really testing. Working through FRQs with immediate rubric feedback is often more valuable than another content review pass.
| Source | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| College Board released FRQs | Free | Authentic FRQ practice with official rubrics and sample responses. |
| Prep books (Barron's, Princeton Review, 5 Steps) | About $28 to $30 list (often discounted) | Full timed mock exams and MCQ practice at volume. |
| Khan Academy AP Biology | Free | MCQ practice organized by unit; useful for topic-specific drilling. |
| Bozeman Science / Amoeba Sisters (YouTube) | Free | Content videos, particularly good for cellular and molecular topics. |
| Cognito AP Biology | Free with limits | Structured content across all eight units with FRQ practice built to the rubric. |
College Board released FRQs
AP Central publishes released FRQs, scoring guides, and sample student responses. AP Bio FRQs are very format-specific: the rubric awards points for hitting specific vocabulary and specific mechanisms, and general biological reasoning without the right terms often misses the point.
Use released FRQs as the primary source for essay practice. Aim for at least 15 across the year, split roughly by unit weighting. For each one, write the response, then score yourself against the official rubric by highlighting every accepted-response point you hit. Doing this ten or twelve times calibrates your sense of what "good enough" looks like faster than any textbook.
Limitation: released full MCQ sections are less common than released FRQs. Supplement MCQ elsewhere.
Cost: free.
Prep books
Barron's, Princeton Review, and 5 Steps to a 5 each include several full-length practice exams with MCQs and FRQs (six, split between print and online, in the Barron's and Princeton Review Premium editions; three in 5 Steps). Barron's tends to have denser content review; Princeton Review has clearer answer explanations.
Use them for timed mock exams in the last four to six weeks. AP Bio's 90-minute FRQ section is a stamina test as much as a content test, and doing two full mocks under strict timing builds the pacing habits you need.
Limitation: FRQ sample responses in prep books tend to be less nuanced than actual College Board samples. For scoring calibration, trust released materials.
Cost: about 30 list, often discounted.
Khan Academy AP Biology
Khan Academy's AP Biology course organizes MCQ practice by unit and by topic within units. For AP Bio's content-heavy structure (photosynthesis and respiration alone are dozens of specific facts), being able to drill on a single topic in isolation is more useful than mixed practice early in the year.
Use it as the primary MCQ source throughout the year. It's free and the coverage is comprehensive.
Limitation: lighter on FRQ practice. Khan's MCQ approach doesn't map onto the 90-minute FRQ format. Pair with released FRQs.
Cost: free.

Get started for free!Bozeman Science and Amoeba Sisters
Bozeman Science and Amoeba Sisters are two widely used YouTube channels for AP Bio content. Bozeman's AP Biology videos cover the core topics concept by concept (they were made for the earlier AP framework, so check them against your CED unit); Amoeba Sisters is more visual, particularly good for cellular and molecular processes.
Use them for content review when a topic isn't sticking. Not a replacement for practice tests.
Limitation: no practice tests. Pair with released FRQs and MCQ drills.
Cost: free.
Cognito AP Biology
Cognito's AP Biology course covers all eight units matched to the CED with quiz questions built to the same rubric style College Board uses. Practice questions are built around the specific vocabulary and mechanism language the FRQ rubric rewards, which trains the response format alongside the content.
Use it as the primary structured resource across the year, paired with released FRQs for authentic timed practice and Khan Academy for MCQ volume.
Limitation: Cognito doesn't publish timed full-length mock exams. Add a prep book in the final month for that specific format.
Cost: subscription.
How to sequence your practice
October to February: work through structured content unit by unit, using Khan Academy MCQ practice as you finish each unit. From January, start writing one released FRQ every two weeks, self-scored against the official rubric. March: increase FRQ pace to weekly and add MCQ drilling from a prep book. April: two full timed 6-question FRQ practice sessions plus one full mock exam. In the final week, review your own scored FRQs rather than adding new material.
