AP Bio score chart: What raw score gets you a 5

The AP Biology score chart is the conversion CollegeBoard uses to turn your raw exam performance (60 multiple-choice questions plus 6 free-response questions) into the 1-5 AP score that lands in your July results. Each section is weighted, a scaled score is computed, and CollegeBoard sets the cutoffs after the exam based on difficulty and cohort performance.

An important caveat: CollegeBoard doesn't publish an official raw-to-composite table for AP Bio. The numbers below are reconstructed from released practice exams and prep-provider analysis, not fixed rules, and they typically shift a few points in either direction each year based on how the exam calibrates.

These bands are ballparks. The FRQ rubric points move slightly year to year, and cohort performance can push the cutoff either way. Don't treat any percentage as a fixed target; aim higher than the band suggests to build a buffer.

Why the exact boundary varies

AP Bio's cutoffs move for a few reasons. The multiple-choice section mixes straight content questions with data analysis and experimental design questions, and the ratio changes year to year. FRQ difficulty depends heavily on which topics come up: A year with a Hardy-Weinberg long FRQ and a signaling short FRQ can feel very different from a year weighted toward ecology and biotechnology.

Cohort strength matters too. AP Biology is one of the largest AP sciences, with roughly 287,000 students in 2025, and CollegeBoard calibrates the cutoff so the meaning of a 5 stays stable across years. In 2026, 15% of students earned a 5 and 71% scored 3 or higher (preliminary College Board figures); in 2025 the figures were 18.9% and 70.4%.

How the curve tends to move for AP Bio

Many students find the MCQ section more manageable than the FRQs. The MCQs reward students who've built quick pattern recognition on stimulus-based questions (graphs, data tables, experimental setups), which is trainable in a few weeks of released-question practice. The FRQs are where 4s become 5s and 3s become 4s: The rubrics look for specific vocabulary and named mechanisms, not vague description.

Unit weightings also tilt the math. Units 3 (Cellular Energetics), 6 (Gene Expression) and 7 (Natural Selection) together account for roughly 37-52% of the exam depending on the year, so an FRQ set that leans on any of those three can move your composite by several points.


What raw score to target in practice

For a comfortable 5, aim to answer roughly 45-50 of the 60 MCQs correctly and pick up most of the available rubric points across the 6 FRQs (typically 6+ out of 8 to 10 on each long FRQ and 3+ out of 4 on each short FRQ). That combination should put you in the top band in most years.

For a 4, roughly 35-42 MCQs plus partial FRQ credit tends to be enough. For a 3, roughly 27-34 MCQs with basic FRQ engagement usually gets you there. The FRQs are the highest-leverage practice in the last month before the exam; a full mock FRQ set every weekend from April onwards, marked against the official rubric, does more for your score than another pass through the textbook.

One last note on targeting: These bands assume you're chasing a specific composite. If a target school gives credit for a 4 or a 5 equally, aiming for a comfortable 4 and spending the saved time on other subjects can be the better call. Check each target school's credit policy before deciding.
