Best AP World review resources: Free and paid ranked

AP World History Modern covers 800 years across every world region, which is more content than any single review book will fully cover. Most students use a combination: A review book for compressed content, one or two free video series for topics they didn't understand in class, and released CollegeBoard FRQs for essay practice. For 2026-27, check the edition: College Board changed the short-answer and long-essay sections for the May 2027 exam (all three SAQs are now required, and the LEQ is a single broad prompt rather than a choice of three), so a book printed before the 2027 editions will describe the wrong format.

Best for: Students who want the fullest paid coverage in a single book and are willing to work through a longer text. Particularly strong for the early modern units (3-4) where content depth pays off.

Honest limitation: Density. Some students bounce off it. If you want faster payoff, Princeton Review is a lighter read.

Princeton Review is the most readable paid book. Content coverage is solid across all 9 units, and the essay strategy chapters walk through DBQ, LEQ and SAQ formats with template structures. The MCQ bank is smaller than Barron's but sufficient for warm-up practice.

Best for: Students who want readable content plus essay strategy in one book, and are already keeping up with class content.

Honest limitation: If you're relying on the book to fill significant content gaps, Barron's or AMSCO covers more.

AMSCO is different from the other paid options: It's more of a college-textbook-quality resource than a review book. Content coverage is deep, with primary source excerpts, historical thinking skill practice, and unit-end assessments. Many AP World teachers use it as a class textbook.

Best for: Students who want deep content rather than compressed review, or who are self-studying without a strong classroom teacher.

Honest limitation: Length. AMSCO is a full-length textbook rather than a revision book, which is a lot of reading for the final month. Use it during the school year for depth, and switch to a lighter review book for the final month.
